I don't understand why some are so obsessed with the MPG calculation. What difference is it going to make if it's off 0.5 MPG? Are you going to stop driving your truck, or even drive it less? I use it, but generally as a relative measurement, i.e. if my mileage drops 2 MPG all of a sudden (regardless of what is was before) I know something has changed for the worse. I use the instantaneous meter as real-time feedback to my driving style. Again, the absolute numbers don't matter much, it's the relative data I'm interested in.
Years ago I went on a long camping trip with my future in-laws. Great people, but they were obsessed with calculating the fuel mileage down to the 1/10 of an MPG. I made the rookie mistake at that time of asking "What difference does it make?", i.e. what are you going to do differently based on this information? Didn't go well for me, lol. Maybe I just made that mistake again?
I don't think it was intended for us to understand why some folks do what they do. You're right though, but I believe if there are circumstances that leaves room for complaints or concerns, there will always be those that will find reason to do so. That's what makes us all different.
You talk about your years ago story involving your camping trip and your in-laws obsession for calculating their fuel mileage. I spent 21 years in the military and was used to only doing everything by the numbers. There never where any Gray areas. It was either Black or White. Man for the first 10 to 15 years after my retirement I had a real problem with how and why people did the things they did. i haven't changed a whole lot I just have learned to live with it.

pretty much how I feel. Why worry about it? Too many variables. It's just an average....the hand calculated is also an average. . What if the pump doesnt give you a full gallon?
