So I got my camping trailer level , but the ball is high enough that if I open the tailgate its rests on the trailer before the cables get tight enough to stop the motion. AND since the camera is the part of the tailgate that sticks out the most I am worried about someone accidently putting weight on it and what it might damage. I am considering a rubber bumper on either side of the camera but wondered if anyone else has dealt with this issue and what the fix was besides the obvious do not open the tailgate when the trailer is connected. will add photo later.

Did it on a GM truck I owned - buy a factory tailgate cable, then shorten it to limit the tailgate drop. Only use it when towing.
I used a nicropress sleeve to connect the cable halves.

Mine hit the tongue jack so I got an extended shank. I often use the back of the truck while TT is connected.
