Did the same thing last year to mine, I've always pulled with a drop tailgate but didn't want to move the backup camera so I tried it without my V tailgate. Got back from our first trip in our new truck and did the same thing you did, I moved the camera to my cut down gate. I have a new tailgate that will never be on the truck until I sell it.
Gooseneck/5th wheel owners fall into two categories.
1) Those who have damaged their tailgates, and
2) Those that will, eventually.
I had a great routine for chocking and dropping my trailer. I went for years with the factory tailgate. Then one time a guy in the next site came over and was trying to help. I was so distracted by trying to keep track of where he was and what he was doing that I forgot to drop the gate.
Man, sorry to see it. My wife has saved my butt with this more than one time. I have debated changing over to a vee, but I use my truck a lot for hauling and sometimes with long lumber I rest it with the tailgate down and that would not work so well with a vee gate. I know I could change em back and forth, but those tailgates are heavy!

I hear ya. I might be rude to others at times but when neighbors try to help or talk, I just ask them let me do it myself due to distractions.
Most under stand and will just watch.
Knock on wood but the tailgate is still in factory condition.

Man, I wish I could do that while I work. Most of the time I have someone standing two feet away yammering like crazy. I often wonder how they would like it if I did the same to them while they try to work. That is the biggest reason I like working for dealers on their lots. They just give me a list and leave me completely alone, at least most of the time.
It gets even better when there is a crew sitting and watching. Then I have questions from every "do-it-yourselfer" in the park.
No idea what kind of 5th wheel hitch you have, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to rig up a warning buzzer (or light) that operates when the coupler is opened and the tailgate is up.
A switch that is closed when the tailgate is closed and a switch that is closed when the coupler is open, connected in series and then to your warning device.
We are full time in a large fiver, so we hook up and drop a bunch during the year. Last year I ran a V shaped tool box at the rear of my bed and had my stock tailgate off. Got rid of the tool box and put the stock tailgate back on. I keep going back and forth on changing to a V tailgate. Forgetting the gate happens to a lot of experienced folks out there.
