Hello I have a 93 stock turbo idi. This truck has had 5+ owners before me and has been set up and used for long haul gooseneck at some point. One of these feature I found after my purchase was that it has an engine brake. Let me make that clear it is an engine brake not an exhaust brake I've been wrenching all my life I've had the exhaust apart and there is no mistaking that sound out of a 3 inch straight pipe. So my questions are these, has anyone ever heard of this on an idi (ive found nothing and been called a lier) if so who made and or makes and the final and most important one of the previous owners removed the control module and would love to replace any information on how to do so would be greatly appreciated. any information at all would be great thank you
No it doesn't just sound like that........ its as loud as a custom semi. It kicks in at about 2-2 1/2 grand. The wires are still hanging where they cut out the control box. The switch and the indicator light for it are still there and lights up if you flip even though its not hooked up to anything.(I did disconnect that after I got it) I have my CDL and wrench a lot I know what I'm saying please don't insult me
Kaosis143 - I don't think anyone here has called you a liar or insulted you ( I think you have to have 50 posts before they are allowed to do that), these are just guys who like their IDI and are willing to help others, One actually would love to hear more about it and the other agreed that the IDI is a good engine braking platform,
maybe post a couple of pictures of what your looking at, since know one else you spoke to has seen one it's obviously not very common,
I apologize I have a bad habit of being overly defensive. But yes I will try to get some pics and a short video clip ( if I can not sure if I can post video) of the jake coming down a hill. Although there is not much to take a picture of except where the control box was

I'm trying to wrap my head around what it could be, some sort of mechanical device controlled by a solenoid?
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that general basis of a jake brake a switch operates silaniods that hold the exhaust valves open????
yes, that is how a jake works. i have never seen or heard of a jake or any other engine brake on an idi diesel. i looked into it when i got my 88 and was told by jacobs that the 21.5:1 compression ratio was way too high to use an engine brake.
i then looked into the BD diesel exhaust brake, but they also said it would do serious damage due to the extreme compression ratio if not used properly. so i dropped the idea.
with the 5 speed, there was enough compression to act and feel like it had an engine brake, and with the straight pipes it was actually louder than most of the big trucks on the road back in the late 80's early 90's
people used to swear i had an engine brake on it too, it is just the nature of the exhaust note when you get out of it above around 2200 rpm.
you could hear me coming down the hill before the highway turnoff from over 1/2 mile away if conditions were rite.
I've talked to friends with idis I know there are plenty of people who have put exhaust brakes on idi s and it was sounded like like a jake with the stock exhaust but I just seem to be running in circles getting blank stares baffling people and being told I'm full of it
Are there any wires going in the actual valve covers or cylinder heads themselves besides the glow plug wires? If it has an actual engine/jake brake like a big Cummins, Cat, etc, then there has to be something going under the valve cover to control it I would think.
If so, I’d pull a valve cover and see if the solonoids have any info such as manufacturer, SN, model. Then You might be able to search by that to get a control box. And take a picture of it and post it.
if you can’t find any info on, It then it may have been custom designed and built by someone and installed by one of the PO and finding the box may be near impossible.

Wow, I didn’t think of that! It may be a great idea. Might have to try that the next time I’m on wolf creek pass.It may also have Been used to keep the converter locked with hazard lights on or pulling a trailer with messed up wiring that’s backfeeding the brake light circuit preventing the converter from locking. Red light is probably just to remind the driver that the switch is on so they don’t forget and stall it when comming to a stop.
And to the OP, As as for the wires under the dash, after taking a quick look at mine, it appears it’s the wires that went to the trailer brake controller and it was just cut out, just my guess anyway.
