Torque Ring Gear on 9 Inch
I am putting a new ring gear on a 9 Inch differential. I need to torque the ring gear bolts. I mounted the differential on an axle, held in a vise, but when I try to torque the bolts, the differential turns. My differential is a True Torque type, and is a limited slip. I thought it would lock up when one axle doesn't turn. My axles are 28 spline. I have seen a tool made from a cut off axle. Do I need to obtain this tool, or is there another way to do it? I don't want to put the differential in the vise.

All limited slip differentials, even lockers, will break loose if you apply enough torque to one side; they are "limited slip". The only types that won't are spools.
What I've done before is to insert all the bolts so they're hand tight, then stick a pry bar between some of them to hold the assembly steady while I torqued the others. Then go around until they're all tightened to spec.
