Dropped straight axle

I still have a straight axle in my 52 and want to lower it. I’ve seen the mid fifties magazine carries them but they are really expensive compared to eBay. I want a 4” drop and Mid fifties only has 3” drop axles. While searching eBay I found quite a few different sellers but ones I saw were to 1948 and for cars, or I saw 53-56 and they were less than $200. I need to buy the new axle, the king pin kit as well as the tie rods for the drop axle. Anybody have any ideas or places they have gone?

Nostalgia Sid's

Here is supposedly the #1 guy for dropped axles- Nostalgia Sid's . It looks like this is the same axle mid-fifty is selling if you reference the pictures on both sites. Directly from Sid's looks like it will be cheaper. It says he'll only do 3" drop, but looking at the pics on the sight, that's plenty low. It looks like it will cost $450 total (plus shipping to and from) for dropped axle ($350), lowered tie rod ends ($60), and new king pins ($40).

It says "All of our dropped axles are straightened, set to factory spec. to within .5 degrees, king pin bores resize to original bore size, sandblasted and magnafluxed to check for cracks."

I can't offer a testimonial as I chose to go the Mustang II route, but I've heard he is the best from guys driving all makes.

Good luck,

Kreg

Thanks Kreg
Sid must be really good. I posted this here and a couple places on Facebook and I’ve gotten three responses including yours and all three were to Sids. I will be going there. I wanted to get it done before the power tour mid June but looks like I will be doing it afterwards
thanks

Rob,
Welcome to the forum! Going with Sid's axle is a good choice. There are others but they're far inferior to Sid's work. If you talk with him, I'm sure he'll explain the reason he only goes as far as 3" with the drop. More than that and the steering geometry gets messed up and you run into bump steer and binding issues. Starts getting dangerous and definitely not recommended. Better to have a safe and driveable truck than one that looks cool crashing into the ditch. Enjoy your ride.
