Neutral Safety Switch

Good afternoon fellow Ford guys and gals. I am rebuilding a 65 F100. I have a tilt steering column out of a 78 F250. The NSS is on the transmission of the donor truck. The tranny I have is a C6 out of a 79 Ford or such type car. The problem I have is not wiring, it is trying to find a spot to mount the NSS. As you can see in the picture there are no attachment points on the tranny or no nut on the shifting shaft to remove the shifting linkage. So the million dollar question is where can I mount it. I have seen where people will cut a slot in the steering column and mount it there. I have no measurements on where to start or what kind of actuator to use on the shifter shaft. Please throw me some info if you would please.

Well your first problem is. That ain't no C6. It looks like a FX or FMX. You are probably going to have to get creative and figure out how to put one on the linkage somewhere.

One other thing. If that is a good turn signal switch in the column you have, treat it like it was gold plated because new ones are priced like they are. When it comes time to wire it in I have a lot of notes from my column wiring. If you need any help with it.

1978/79 F100/350: NSS located on transmission, C4 uses a different NSS than C6.

If the A/T is from a car, how many trans pan bolt holes does it have, 11 or 14 or 17?

Well when I first got to this forum I said it was a FMX tranny. But with the info I put on here I was told it was a c6 . I really don't know. As far as the bolt count on the pan, I will find out tonight. I will return with the info tomorrow. Thanks in advance

I'm probably not going to be much help, but I'm in the middle of swapping a 390/C6 from a 73 into my 65. Switched the steering column along with the power steering and disc brakes. I was thinking the switch at the bottom of the steering column was the neutral safety switch, along with the reverse is that not the case?

2 wire switches are neutral safety. Four wire neutral safety plus backup lights
I have at least 3 NOS switches in various configurations. Doing that On my truck this week prior to first fire up on new engine. Got pics here somewhere . .

Crop duster. At this point I have a wiring diagram of the 65 and the 78. So hopefully I can transfer wires from one to the other. Thank God I am an Electrician by trade. Would have never attempted this without this knowledge. But if I get stuck, you will be the first one I contact.

pmason0. There are no switches anywhere. That is my problem. The donor truck that I got the steering column has the NSS on the tranny. My tranny that I have now has no mounting for the NSS. That year was on the original donor car steering column.

FX, FMX or MX Cruise-O-Matic.

FX = 1958/67 Passenger Cars, 1958/64 F100/350.

FMX = 1973/77 F350 300 I-6, 1969/89 Passenger Cars.

MX, the pan is different than the above, has a protruding notch and the MX has a larger filter = 1965/67 F100/350 352, 1965/72 F350 300 I-6

1965/77: NSS located towards the bottom of the steering column.

1978/79: NSS located on the trans, but the only A/T's offered in 1978/79 trucks were the C4 & C6.

Carpenter and others sell the neutral safety switch and the transmission selector pin for 65-77 trucks. I'm sure you can adapt it to a 78 column with a little work. The trick will be to get the geometry just right on the shift linkage so all the stars line up and it will actually prevent it from starting in anything but Park or Neutral. If you don't have a chassis manual for something with a tilt column it would be a good time to find one. There isn't any difference between the cars and trucks as far as the tilt mechanism goes the only difference is the trucks don't have the key on the column. I rebuilt my 79 column using my 71 car manual.
Also did your column come from a two wheel drive truck? If it did and you got the rag joint adapter with it you are in good shape'. If not here is a link to one that should do the trick.https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/produc..._Flange_36-spl
