Overdue service

I just bought a 2011 3.5 ECB with 171k with no service records, I know I'm crazy. So I started doing services the plugs had never been changed and the boots were stuck on the plugs, what a pain in the *** that was. It ran good with no skipping and the plugs a gap of around .42 to .43 the burn looked great on the plugs. But she's got new ones now. When I pulled the tranny pan the fluid was very very gray like no red tint left. Good new the magnet had very little on it. While I had the pan off I installed a drain plug. The transfer case fluid looked good but it was a .5 qt low. thats a lot when it only holds about two qts. I ran out of time I'm doing the diff's next weekend.

Good to get all of this done as it is past due if it hasn't been done before. Don't worry about the color of the transmission fluid. Mercon LV turns dark very quickly. It's just a normal charistic of this type of fluid.

not sure what you have in mind for differential fluid, but I'd stick with the 75w140 for the rear, and consider upgrading to a 75w90 in the front instead of the specified 80w90. The 75w90 will be a synthetic blend at a minimum and will be a better fluid all around. But, can't go wrong either way.

what type of fluid did you use in the transmission and transfer case?

I used Motorcraft Mercon LV in the transmission and I had some Valvoline Mercon V left over from a job I used it in the transfer case. I'm going to use Valvoline Syn 75w 140 in the rear and 75w 90 in the front

Might consider changing your transfer case fluid with non mercon v.

I've always used mercon conventional or dual rated (mercon/mercon v) synthetic

just throwing it out there. As best I can remember, valvoline is a licensed mercon v product and is probably not considered backward compatible

Thanks for the info. You think Mercon V by Valvoline would have the same explosive additive? No matter because I have to change it now anyway. LOL

If it is licensed by ford, and I think valvoline is, it's a pretty good bet.

I've been using Wal-Mart brand supertech regular mercon in my expedition. Changed out every 60k or so. It's cheap, and hard to argue with having 200k on the clock.

I love synthetics, but have just never used them in my transfer case on this one.
