I decided to go ahead and use the wheels I used to have on my Bronco, minus the plastidip the previous owner of the wheels put on them. 17x9 with 4.5” backspacing. I had tires mounted already, but I was waiting on black acorn bulge lug nuts to arrive. Gotta have the right style lugs!
I’m going to replace the center caps. They’re originally chrome and the PO put plastidip on them. I started taking the plastidip off and noticed rust underneath so decided not to bother taking anymore off. Should I go with chrome centers or gloss black centers? I kinda like the black, just not plastidip. I think it makes the rims look bigger by putting the focus on the outer lip that’s machined.
Why not finish peeling off th we plastidip then apply chrome cleaner, see what you get. Just saw a jay leno garage clip talking with the maker of one product introduced back in the fifties... dont recall the product name at the moment. Looks to me it works chrome miracles. You can always reapply plastidip if you dont like the results.

Yeah here it is , called quick-glo
I'm not putting Plastidip back on, because I don't like the look of it. I didn't bother "peeling" it off further, because more than one cap was rusted pretty badly with bubbling all over underneath the Plastidip. I can see why the PO covered them in black rubber spray. I used acetone and elbow grease to get that stuff off due to the age and thinness of the Plastidip and the fact that I had those supplies on hand and didn't need to buy anything else. It didn't make the original black paint underneath any worse than it already was. I just wanted smaller wheels than the 20's I was experimenting with. They seem to be working out with a much smoother ride. I was going to strip the Plastidip off and then shoot them with gloss black paint, but like I said, I didn't want to bother with rusted, and dented, caps if I can just pick up a new set of already black centers for $20-30, which I am. I'll hold onto these centers in case I decide to try something else later on and want a guinea pig.
Here's an idea of what they looked like before. I googled the rims to see what they looked like underneath before putting forth any effort and decided that I preferred their original look even if they were a little beat up.
