My Wife took her 07 expy in to the dealer for a oil change and rotate.
They told her that the lug nuts expanded and that they need to be replaced for $120 (parts, no labor) at the next oil change.
She did say it took an hour and 1/2 and they showed her a:larger socket" that they needed to use
Can lug nuts expand? If so, Whats a good brand to go with ?
I’ve had to replace those chrome plated lug nuts because they are soft and round off easily. Maybe that happened and they just decided to cover it up for some reason by saying they expanded.
If you still have the old lug nuts on it, just check them with your wrench to see if it fits or slips on the nut
They can and do expand. The chrome metal cover gets corrosion between it and the nut and causes them to swell. Ford isnt the only car maker to do this either.
these chrome covered lug nuts are notorious for "expanding". what really happens is that the chrome cover gets misshapen when you use an impact gun and torque them to death. I have had to replace all of the ones on my expy because they were all damaged and would no longer fit in the correct size socket (annoying and they looked bad). they cost about 10.00 a piece from ford. as stated above, just inspect your lug nuts and see if they looked damaged at all, if so, order them online from a ford dealer and replace them yourself.
Something is really not right here............... IMHO, start with a new mechanic
Actually it's a legitimate issue. I know this because one of my sons works at a Ford Dealer and he had to get a 19.5/18.5mm flip socket to be able to remove the expanded lug nuts and the ones with missing chrome caps.
