Oil change information

Hey everyone. Two questions regarding changing my oil. I'm looking to go to full synthetic, but there seems to be so many different ones out there I don't know what would be best. Any suggestions? And my follow up question is should I stick with the Motorcraft filter or go to something like the WIX XP filter that is designed for synthetic oil. Thanks for any insight!

IMO you should stay with something like the Motorcraft synthetic blend oil in the correct weight for your engine.

I have tried full synthetics in all my vehicles both low and high mile engines and MY result is that the oil seems to burn....

I tried full synthetic in my '03 3.0 Ranger Edge and it actually burnt up 2 quarts between the recommended 5k mile oil changes...

I have since gone back to the Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend (Always use the Motorcraft filters) and my engine really seems to run better and it doesn't burn up a full quart between changes.

(I have 136k miles on it)

FWIW, I've been using Mobil 1 since the mid 80's and never had any oil consumption issues. My current 2004 with 113k uses less than 1/4 qt between my 10,000 mile changes.

I think that all the full synthetic oils are equally good. Just pick one brand and stick with it.

Oil threads tend to work out like politics and religion; with that said, just pick a quality name brand that is readily available in auto parts stores (by design, this comment excludes one brand ) and go with it. OP didn't mention what he's driving, but as for oil filters you will be fine with the Motorcraft. If you have the OHV 4.0 and if you put a Fram on it, you might discover (as others have) valve train noise at startup, especially on cold days.

*Something to think about........semi synthetic oil is one of the more evasive product labelings out there. This because, they they don't tell you what % is synthetic. With that said, take 31.99 ounces of dino oil, mix in .01 ounce full synthetic, call the result semi synthetic (and it is, and the label on the bottle is honest) and price accordingly. Some people don't mind this; you decide if you're one of them.

Since you are in Florida, there is no reason to use a 5w oil, and in my opinion the last number on your oil should be no lower than 30, say 10w30. I am aware that Ford is recommending **w20 oil on it's newer trucks, but that is just because the govt. makes them recommend the oil they used in their gas mileage testing. 20 weight oil will give slightly better gas mileage at the expense of shorter engine life. My Ranger was my fathers, which I have inherited. When dad was too old to drive I used his truck for an errand. When I started it I heard a main bearing rumble. I mentioned it to him and asked what oil he was using. He said he was using 20 weight. When the truck became mine I switched to 10w40 which stopped the main bearing rumble. 30 weight might have done the same, but I prefer slightly thicker oil.
