Early vs late powerstroke

Hello all, just had a few questions on the powerstroke engine.

I have a 1993 IDI which needs a complete overhaul or rebuild and my buddy has an old 1996 F350 complete running for $1000 so I’m thinking about swapping engine and complete wiring over to my 93.

Questions
What differences are there between the 94-97ish powerstroke vs 99 and up. While I know some differences, I don’t know all.

Cyljnder heads? Are the cylinder heads in the 96 compatible with later model injectors?

pistons and rods? Any changes from early to late 7.3

High pressure oil pump mounting? Any changes in the high pressure oil pump plumbing where it bolts to the engine. I know they upgraded the lines.

ultimate question is what would it take to get the 96 ps to run like a 2001 factory ps.

thanks

Thumbs up

Both trucks being equal, same trans/tire size/gearing/etc, pretty easy to make a First Gen run like a Super Duty. SDs are pretty portly. Intake, tuner (whether six position or Hydra), and exhaust.

The OE downpipe is comical at best, that is the major choke point of the stock vehicle. The cat is not helping with age, but the rear muffler flows well. I paid $270 shipped for a Diamond Eye SS turbo back, 3" DP into a 4" back. Cannot beat it for the money. I have a used 3" DP you can have for freight and a few dollars for beer if you are on a tight budget, I took it off when I installed my stainless downpipe.

Stock injectors are tiny, around 95cc... so do not expect 400rwhp. 240-260rwhp is realistic to me with no intake plenum or preturbo exhaust leaks, but hey, you start with 180 bone stock.

Here's a link to a good read on the subject. It is more about later model 7.3s. Still a good read. Follow some links there for some more info.

HIt man,

That Downpipe might be just what I need then if I do this swap. I have the banks monster exhaust on this one already but I bet my sidewinder kit has a different Downpipe. I have heard stories on that Factory Downpipe restricting the exhaust. I wonder if that’s the one I hear looks like it got flattened by a forklift!

You 2 that posted links for the PDF is great. I’m hoping it’s a 97 as when I asked him what year it was, he thought it was a 96 bit wasn’t sure. I’m guessing each year since 94.5 they did a lot of upgrades so the higher the year the better.

The guy with the doner truck I’m trying to get said the engine has a little blow by but runs great. He mainly messes with gassers and I usually see a little blow by on the 7.3s anyway. Not sure how much blow by is bad or how to measure it though. Going to start it and Take a look when I get a chance. Suposibly it has less than 200k and the P.O.
didn’t have a programmer on it. This might be a good deal I hope.

thanks for the input.
