Replacement fuel tank

Long story short: I have the fuel system completely out of my '53 and saw that the tank has had numerous previous repairs over its life. I'm going to replace it. I'm considering going with a polyethylene tank from Mid-Fifty to eliminate any future rust issues.

Pro & cons? Anyone run one them?

I don't like plastic tanks as they don't do well in case of abrasion or fire. Your outside plastic tank needs to have a stone shield too. LMC truck has new metal tanks - Gas Tanks 1948-52 F1 - F2 1953-56 F100 - F250 LMC Truck. I'm sure Midfifty or DC have them too.

Just a thought . . . Your last tank lasted 65 years. Are you going to keep your truck until the year 2083?

I don't have an issue with poly tanks, most "modern" trucks have them these days. As for making the choice for an F100, I think that paying more money for a tank that holds 2 gallons less would be more of a decision point for me.

I have one of the LMC Truck tanks specified above. It's good quality and matches the original.

I bought one of these from Ebay and I'm amazed by the level of quality for the price.

Hey Jak,
We are running the same exact tank as Jniolin posted above. Our's is a 22 gallon '70 Mustang
tank - we paid $120 on Rock Auto. The fill comes up through the bed & you have to move around
a brace or two to make room for it under the bed. 38% more range than the stinky 16 gallon in cab
1950 tank.

Good luck over there.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have considered moving the tank to the rear of the frame, but since so much of the truck is stock, I'd like to keep it stock. The metal versus poly question was more an issue about rust - I'm not that worried about range, since she's not a long haul driver, but she does sit quite a bit over the fall and winter. A poly tank would eliminate rust issues, particularly internally. There are plenty of metal stock tanks out there, so finding one isn't an issue if I want to go with a straight replacement.

I won't be around in 2083, that's for sure. The tank - if it's original - shows signs of at least two previous repairs. There is a patch near the bottom rear, and a crack in the area around the fuel pickup has been brazed at least once. I could go the route of having it hot tanked and pressure tested, but it doesn't seem worth the money or effort given replacements are readily available.

Opinions are like Faces, we all have them and some may be better than others, that said hears mine. If it were my truck I would go for a steel tank made in the US. Rear mount cool, but polyethylene Vs.Steel, I like steel.
