Hey All, I need some help! I have a 1999 f150 XL Extended Cab (drum brakes). I blew my rear end several years ago and my mechanic found a Limited Slip Rear End (I'm assuming off an Expedition or Explorer?) that fit it. Now I've blown that rear end and I can't find the right parts because I can't look it up via VIN #, etc....Also there are no tags etc. on the diff cover.
I DON'T want to go back to the regular diff.
So here's my question: What Limited Slip Diffs from an Expedition or Explorer will fit my truck??
your bolt pattern is 135 mm circle.......... ( over 5.5 inch) ..... the Explorer is 4.5 inch.....I think many expeditions were coil spring rear ends, not leaf...... You have a 8.8 inch 3.55 gear axle.. what makes you think it is NOT out of an F150 ?

Steve, it could be. But I know it's not out of a 97-03 f150 because as far as I know, they didn't offer Limited Slip Diffs during those years for f150's. Could be a later one...who knows. I can't even get the f***ing Ford Dealerships to give me any info because the only thing they can go by is the VIN # and Year. They have a bunch of computer lookup boys working in the parts departments with very limited actual knowledge of what I'm even talking about. It's ridiculous.
Well Ford calls it "Traction Lock" and both my 1998 F150 and my 2003 F150 have it. Maybe because they are 4X4. Maybe because they have the Sterling 9.75 axle. But both rear wheels spin at the same time.
Might look for an Expedition or F150 that has a 4X4 package with the 5.4L engine.
the 8.8 inch axle has been a FORD standard for many years.. Used in everything from pickups to Mustangs.. now granted, there are differences in the axle shafts, but the pumpkin and bearings are pretty much standard... and there were LS units available.... I don't see a problem rebuilding the axle with "standard 8.8 parts) or replacement with a different f150 axle.
The limited slip carrier out of the explorer 8.8 will work in your axle but the whole axle won't work due to different dimensions and bolt pattern as said before.

I special ordered my 1997 F150 Supercab XLT 2WD with a 3.55 limited slip and it came with it. Even says so on the window sticker.
Just as a side note, since you'll be on your 3rd diff:
I had my rear diff oil replaced, and it was over-filled. The rear diff started to shudder on light acceleration when turning after driving for 20 min or more (foaming). Changed it again, but the proper way, issue gone.
