While out on a ride today of approximately 100 miles I noticed my battery gauge needle was showing a charging rate higher than ever, all the way over to the right. Last year I had my generator rebuilt not because of a problem but I just felt every 25 years or so it needs to be rebuilt. When I stop at a light the needle comes back to just slightly above the center where it always rests. Any ideas or suggestions as to what to check? I am still 6 volt positive ground.
Thanks

Ed, you need to check static condition, voltage of the battery. Then check voltage when the engine is running above idle and the ampmeter is showing "high".Post these voltages. Excessive charge rate would be the norm for an old battery on its way out. My swag is what you are seeing is normal unless the battery is "boiling". Worst case is bad regulator.
One of my old cars did this on a trip when the voltage regulator did not register the correct battery voltage and told the generator to charge as much as possible. The result was that the battery started to smell as it boiled itself away. A quick fix was to remove the voltage regulator cover and insert a match book cover between the contact points. Replacing the regulator when I got home fixed the issue,
