Something Attached to Throttle Linkage

Hey all, I'm not too mechanically advanced but I've always wanted to learn and am fortunate enough to have a 77 F250 to play with. Anyways there's a part that's connected to my throttle linkage that I can't really figure out what it's for. I've included some pictures of what I'm talking about, the throttle linkage as I understand it is connected to the gas pedal that I highlighted red. So whats this other thing attached to it (highlighted in yellow). Only thing I could think of is it might be something to do with cruise control? Idk I'm lost, any help is appreciated!

Red is connected to the gas Pedal, what on gods green earth is this yellow thing?

Automatic transmission kickdown. When you give it enough throttle that rod moves enough to drop down gears and you go zoom zoom. Looks like it has some sort of shield on it. I haven’t had one with a shield like that.

Awesome thanks for the info, reason I was asking is that shield thing is catching on the fast idle cam and preventing it from it from starting in fast idle when I go to start it first thing in the morning. I'm assuming it would be safe to remove it if I cant get it to stop interfering with the fast idle cam?

Yeah, I'd think you'd be fine. I haven't had an automatic with a shield on the kickdown, so it should be good to go. Might want to hang onto it if it's original. If you don't plan to keep it, someone doing a restoration might be interested in it.

Before I'd drive that thing I'd lose the crude loops of wire that I assume are attached to the springs that close the throttle. That is just begging for the throttle sticking wide open.

The shield may be some sort of extension or home made adapter to get the kickdown to attach to the aftermarket carb .

X2 the blue colored (yellow highlighted) rod is your transmission kick down rod. It basically connects the 4 bbl Edelbrock carb linkage to the transmission to put the trans in passing gear when you push the throttle that far. The shield is just that and something I have never seen. If it gets caught on something, fix that or remove it...is what I would do. And yes you need to improve your carb throttle springs.

Does that plate get caught on the underside of you air filter? Get a taller air filter or a air filter spacer.
