Could someone tell me what this part in this picture is? The one I'm pointing at. And is that cylinder on the top supposed to be open like that? It just looks black on top in the photo but you can see into it. Truck is a 1974 F100 with a 302. Thanks!
That is your charcoal canister for your fuel tank evap system. No, it's not supposed to be open. One line should come from a vent on top of your fuel tank and the other should go to your carb. I'm fairly certain that part in the center of it is a cap of some sort. I don't recall exactly as I gave mine away.
I'm pretty sure the earlier ones were round like yours and later on they went with rectangular ones, but I'm not 100% on that. Here's a pic of mine when I pulled it off. Looks a wee bit different than yours.

You're correct, the earlier ones were round. The 5/16" nipple connects to a line that goes to the fuel tank, The center nipple is capped and is a breather/vent. The 3/4" nipple actually goes to a nipple on the side of the air filter housing.
75BB you are correct, the earlier were round and in the eng compartment. Later on 78/79? they were square shaped and mounted under the cab and on the passenger side/outside frame rail.
