Getting an excursion geared
Getting an excursion geared
I have talk to a couple different places that lift trucks and they say that a diesel excursion is powerful enough i don't need to get it geared when i get it lifted. I plan on getting the performance chip to put in it and they say with that i don't need the gears and i want to know what everyone thinks i should do. Should i get just gears or just a chip or both i really want both so i can have alot of power thanks.

I would get it regeared for sure if you are going to run 44" tires.
I have the PSD on my F-350 with 35" tires and I wouldn't go any bigger w/o regearing.
The gears will help to get it back close to stock performance. If you want more power then yes add a chip too.
But, BEFORE you add a chip get a set of gauges, an intake, and an exhaust installed. I would also look into a trans upgrade if you plan to add a good amount of power to it.
Hope this helps.

Hey thinks dc special that helps alot see most places i talked to said that you didn't need to get it geared i'm also think i might go with like 40 or 38's and they said that the truck was plenty powerful enough to run those that is didn't need gears but i thought i would with anything bigger then 38's also i will look into all the other stuff you said to thanks alot

I see what the shops are saying.........I know plenty of people who run 38" tires w/o regearing.....there is enough power to even run 44" tires w/o regearing.
I just don't like the performance of the truck like that. Also the EGTs would be a little bit higher.
With 38" tires I'd go with 4.30-4.56 gears.
With 40" tires I'd go with 4.56-4.88 gears.
Hope this helps.

The 4.56 would give me the best over all performance as in good gas milage and power right also where is the best place period to get a truck lifted and geared and all that thanks alot

4.56s with 38" PJs would be very close to the same effective gear ratio as a stock X with 3.73s and 31.6" tires.
4.56s with 40" PJs would probably be about the same effective gear ratio as what I currently have with 3.73s and 35" (34.7") BFGs. It would help with mileage some if you do a lot of highway driving since your RPMs will be lower.
I'm planning to run the 40" PJs as well on my SD when they come out........and I can't decide which to run, either 4.56s or 4.88s...some people with the 4.88s and 39.5" tires wish they had run 4.56s, while others with the 38" PJs and 4.56s are very happy with the setup.
I don't know of any places close to SC........
I'm ordering all of my stuff from Marty over at Truck Toyz in McAllen, TX........he's a real good guy to deal with.
Hope this helps.

Go to www.donahoeracing.com or www.edgesuspension.com and you can download a price sheet......the donahoeracing link has a 2003 price sheet.....most places will sell closer to the jobber price listed than the retail price listed.
Hope this helps.

It would be close......especially since the PJs generally measure big for their size.... Personally I like the look of the 38" PJs on a 10.5" lift...leaves some room for wheel travel (the pic is of a SD but you get the idea):

12.5" would be a better route to go in my opinion and there isn't a big price difference between 10.5" and 12.5" lifts. I've heard that Edge might come out with a 10" rear spring to run in the 12.5" lift in the future.
Don't forget with either lift you'll need some driveline work done....
Hope this helps.

Alright i like that look but i would really like to get the 40's so i guess the 12.5 inch lift is what i will go with how much is the 12.5 in lift from edge also is fourwheelparts a good place to go to get your truck lifted there is a store about 2 hours from me thanks alot

I don't know anything about 4wheelparts since there isn't one here in IL yet. I would think that they would be able to handle it... Really any 4x4 shop could do it. Installing a lift on the SDs or Xs aren't that difficult. You might try asking some local guys to see where they have gotten lifts installed and if they are happy with the shop that did the work.
For pricing on the 12.5" Edge and any other components you'd need or want I'd recommend getting in touch with Marty at Truck Toyz...... trucktoyz@sbcglobal.net
Hope this helps.

When I still had my jeep's - fourwheelparts had a bad rep for price gouging and poor workmanship... maybe they are better now, but check the BBB and previous customers to see what they think and go in up front to ensure what to expect...
