1995 F-250 XL 5.8L E4OD. 54K miles (yes, that's all). Had to hit brakes hard yesterday to avoid accident and rear tires locked and slid about 30 feet. Avoided accident though.
Why didn't the Rear ABS work? No CL light. No "Rear ABS Light," except when I engage parking brake. Replace rear ABS sensor? What else should I test/replace? Thanks in advance.
The truck was my great Uncle's farm truck and I acquired it from his estate about 3 months ago. He was meticulous with maintenance.
We debate the RABS effectiveness topic about every other month. A quick search will yield the results.
FYI...if there was an issue with the RABS system it will not trigger a Check Engine Light (CEL). There is no connection between the RABS system and the powertrain control computer.
My experience with three OBS trucks was positive for how the RABS reacted under various conditions. My old 1992 F350 never triggered an ABS light, but I knew it was not working. I replaced the RABS hydraulic control module located on the driver side frame rail as I was repairing other issues related to dragging rear brakes and a soft pedal. After replacing that piece the RABS operated just like it did on my two previous 1993 Lightnings.
Another observation per your comment: " No "Rear ABS Light," except when I engage parking brake." When engaging the parking brake you should get the red Brake light, not the yellow ABS light.
Plenty of reasons for why the rear brakes locked up even beyond a component failure like I had. Best bet for any new to you vehicle is to remove the rear drums to inspect the shoes, hardware and axle seals. Highly suggest to give the front calipers, pads and wheel bearings/seals a good inspection as well.
Thanks guys. Good advice, as usual. From other posts, I see where/how to check ABS codes. So why would the yellow ABS light come on when I put on parking brake?

Good question. Since your truck has RABS II you could see if there is a fault code stored. To the best of my knowledge only the red Brake light should be illuminated with the parking brake engaged.
