Feedback needed ASAP - potential purchase
The picture attached here is the truck in question. 2004 F-450 RWD, V10 67k miles, flatbed. I’ve checked this truck out twice and it drives straight, shifts smooth, and otherwise is in good shape for it’s age and area. I’m looking to use this truck in my landscape business as a material hauler and trailer hauler. There are a few things it will need like shocks and some other wearables but otherwiseseems like a good work truck.
After my second test drive, crawl inside, outside, and underneath I was able to locate a couple issues that don’t seem major but would like the groups thoughts.
1.) There were a few drips of transmission fluid on the end on the tailshaft. Again it shifted smooth and ran well. Is this just a leaky seal? The transmission was not covered in fluid, just this area of the tailshaft.
2.) I noticed an oil leak coming from the rear passenger side valve cover. What made me notice this was a slimy sway bar link.
A quick call to a dealer just to see repair costs for all the items was around $800 if those are in fact the problems.
What are your thoughts on these two issues or can you offer me some suggestions
- run away
- no big deal just get it fixed
- look “here” to see if this is happening
- its a used truck, good luck
- other advice you can give
It’s in my budget, which isnt much, so I really can’t look at much newer. This truck is also the first non piece of crap I’ve seen but these two things showed up. Carfax is clean.
Thanks!
The leak from the passenger valve cover might be the PCV valve, as in oil pushing up around it. Open the hood and find the leak

That's a really clean truck! Must have been a lot of highway miles.

What stinks is this truck is an hour and a half away so it's not easy to just go look. I gave the guy the ultimatum to lower the price again, fix the problems, or just tell me he cannot make it work. It's clean but has wear and tear of being up in the northeast. Best one I've found so far though. I thought about PCV valve too but was looking the whole truck over too. I feel like this may end up not going my way but that's ok as I don't want to rush anything either and end up with my money going up in smoke.

It looks very clean. very low miles, the flatbed is probably a very good fit for your business. I would go for it. I am not a fan of getting my truck fixed at a dealership after it is out of warranty. Their prices are too high in my opinion. You should be able to get those repairs done much more affordably by a competent mechanic at a local garage, and many people could handle doing those two repairs (valve cover gasket and tail shaft seal) themselves, for around $50 in parts I'm guessing.
The engine compartment was almost too clean compared to the rest of the truck so I’m not sire if that was done to hide a filthy oil covered motor.
I have a local mechanic for work if I need it but used the dealer prices as more negotiating. The truck was listed at $10995 and when I countered very low it was dropped to $9500. I still want it lower with these unknowns but not feeling good about it anyways. He hasnt gotten back to me and I told him I need to know. I’ve seen the truck twice so he knows Im interested but he’s a weird dude in that he never counter offers anything. Just stares and says what do you want to do. Its a dealer/mechanic place that sells HD work trucks.
The other reason Im always cautious is I bought a used Escape a few years back and everything seemed good. Then bam!, transmission is dead to the tune of $3200 a few weeks past their 30 day warranty. FML.
So when I see fluid leaks in a truck that will live in a near max loaded situation every day it drives is a bit unnerving to me. Newer used trucks are outrageously expensive but that may give me a better option. This price point however fits my overal budget better but will only leave me with trucks in this condition.
The other thought is to build a new F-550 CC Crew Cab V10 4x4 and trade/sell my current truck which I would think would have some decent value. But that would likely be a better end of the year option when there is cash on hand to reduce the overall costs.
I did also find a 2009 V10 dump but he is impossible to get ahold of. It has 150k which I don’t like and to me is overpriced at $15k.

Just buy the truck. $9500, it fits your budget and suits your needs.
Since you seem uncomfortable with the guy- take it for a few hours. Take it to a Ford dealer. It’s probably $89 for a vehicle inspection, and tell them the story. Tell them you want a highly experienced technician, and a cylinder balance test. Give the tech $20 cash BEFORE he gets to work.
They’ll advise you. It’ll be worth the $100 whether you buy it or if you find a strong reason to NOT buy it. You're seeking a business tool. An expensive one. Spending one percent of the purchase price on a pre-inspection is wise.

That, my friend, is a script. It is a well rehearsed sales script. You’d be wise to rehearse your own counter-script also.

I understand and gave him my own script. Problem is the truck is and hour and a half away and I'm losing my patience with his lack of anything and really don't feel that compelled to drive down there again. I have my pickup for the time being and I will keep searching.
I've found a few 1 tons of different brands that look good but trying to avoid them if I can because once you put a body and a hoist on them they can't legally haul squat. But I'd also need a hoist put on that flatbed 450 because just a flat bed doesn't help so that's another $4-5 grand right there.
Take this truck for example. Yes I know it's a Chevy, whatever, I prefer Fords but I'm not limiting my search that much. This has a hoist and the bed I want and asking for what the reduced price of the 450 was and it probably has wiggle room. But it is a 1 ton which puts me off a bit. Probably only get about 2 ton on that bed for payload.
My goal is to have a material hauler to tow my enclosed trailer. I do have a dump trailer for the extra capacity when needed but I like having the enclosed with ALL my tools with me. So the solution needs to be a dump truck of sorts. A 550 could likely give me 4-5 ton after a body which means less trips. But ALL the 450/550 trucks are either absolute junk, questionably problematic, or I need second mortgage to afford. I cannot afford new so that leaves me with two options.
1.) a clean 1 ton with less capacity
2.) a questionable running higher capacity truck
The reason I'm super skeptical about all this is because of the Escape I bought that blew a transmission to the tune of $3200 that was a couple weeks out of the 30 day warranty period for used vehicles. I'm looking for a Unicorn which is all but impossible but need to be skeptical to keep me from working extra just to pay repair bills. My business isn't exactly printing money at the moment.
