i also have my blue ox weight distribution hitch but it only has a 2” shank. It is also not long (low) enough and I don’t want to use the Ford 2.5” and 2” reducers.
Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a 3” weight distribution shank?
I have a salt spreader I use with a 2" shank. But my 2013 F350 has the 2.5" receiver. The place I bought the spreader actually welded a 2.5" sleeve to the shank of the spreader.
If you just can't find what you're looking for, does having a 3" sleeve welded to your 2.5" shank sound like it would help? Should help with the slop. Just an idea.
When you say it's not low enough do you mean the drop height?. If so ox has a bigger drop part you can buy that should work. As far as reducers, I purchased the curt reducers and I am going to have them welded together. The ones that came stock will go in the garage. I think the 2.5 inch part from ox is unnecessary unless you are pulling a huge trailer.
Did you order your 2-1/2” when you bought the blue ox sway pro, or is the shank another brand?
I may have to go with 2-1/2
I ordered it from eTrailer when I ordered the Blue Ox hitch from them. It's the Blue Ox brand, but unless you have to have matching paint I doubt it matters. Unfortunately they wouldn't swap the shanks for me, so I've also got a 2" one I'm not using that came with the Blue Ox Pro. The 2½" shank attached to the hitch, but without the arms and chains attached, weighed in at 58 lbs. if I remember correctly.
I'm not pulling a huge trailer, but didn't want to hear noises from the shank moving in the adapter moving in the receiver, so got the shank that fits the receiver.
In retrospect things probably wouldn't slop around as the WD system puts a whole lot of torque on the assembly, and things likely wouldn't move much.
You guys are right........I don’t need the 3” shank.
i just bought a Curt 2.5” 7 hole shank....but with the adaptor it is sloppy in the hitch receiver.
Also the drop isn’t low enough, as I’m trying to get the top of the ball at 23” off the ground. With this Curt shank, it only gets me to 25”.
May have to use this one, but I don’t still don’t like the sloppiness.
I researched this quite a bit and the only weight distribution 3" shank drop hitch I could find was the Gen-Y. You can get them in solid or torsional but either are super expensive. I ended up just getting a 2.5" for my weight distribution and then I bought the 3" shank Weigh Safe for when I don't need the Weight Distribution. I was going to spend the money for the torsional Gen-y but then found some info suggesting the torsional only works with really heavy tongue weight.
If you really want a 3" shank you can always buy a 2.5" and just weld some flatbar to it.

Gen-Y offers weight distribution heads with torsion for multiple different weights. The 3 inch option only comes in the 21k which would be too stiff for most folks but they do offer a 2 inch version in 10k and 16k weights and a 2 1/2 inch in 16k and 21k.
Last year, the lightest weight they had was 16k in the 2 inch. I ordered it and it has definately smoothed out my towing experience. I'm guessing the 10k unit would even be better for my max 11k load but I'm not dropping any more cash on my setup. I still have to deal with the reducers and my setup is extremely heavy between the Gen-Y torsion receiver and the distribution head but I am pleased with the overall performance.
If they offered the 3 inch in the 10 K version, I would order it today and sell my other one.
Andersen Hitches also sells a 3" shank WDH. I have one and it works fine for me.
Jim, that is a really clean and simple design. I like it! I know your toy hauler is a lot like mine so I’m wondering if it truly distributes enough weight to the front end. What setup did you have before and how do you compare your Anderson to it?
I had a 2" shank Blue Ox that worked well but wasn't really rated for my trailers 11K GVWR. In fact, the shank was rated for 1,000 lbs less. I needed to make a change, plus I really wanted a 3" shank so I didn't have to deal with the reducers.
