power antenna recommendations

Started to install my power antenna and wire it up yesterday and found it defective. Problem is that I bought it 15 or so years ago. I started looking for a replacement and all seem to be made by two or three foreign companies and all seem to have a lot of negative reviews either saying it was bad out of the box or failed within a week or two.

Mine will be mounted in back cab corner and behind upholstery, so I want something reliable if I can find it. Prices are all over the place for the same unit ranging from 20 bucks to 139 bucks for the same model at different vendors. I'm wondering if an oem unit from a salvage yard would give me better reliability ?? or were they as bad as the aftermarket units... anyone got any recommendations for a good quality unit ?? Even checking the online stereo dealers shows they sell the same junk as ebay with the same return or fail rates.

I've already got the frenched in hole in the cab and have got to have something in that hole !!!

anybody ??

john

Your wife is likely going to be getting in on that side each time John, just place a rose in the vase for her and buy a hidden antenna...

You might fine one in a wrecking yard but it would likely be coming off a dinosaur , nit sure when they stopped using them but think why before 2000. I had one in an 81 Chrysler..

I found a bathroom faucet lift rod for the stopper in my scrap pile, chucked it in my drill press and shaped it with my die grinder. Sanded out the scratches and buffed it up. My real antenna will be hidden.

I remember when dual antennas were the rage in the fifties; my current car has a shark’s tail.

I used a cheapo Chinese model; it works but the main purpose is plugging the hole. I can’t see how more expensive models would improve reception. With USB and Bluetooth on my radio, I don’t listen to live stations that much.

well, that's a thought Drew... crafty ain't you ?? I finally did enough research to wade through the crap ones on the net and found what the high end cars use... Hirschmann. So I bought this one...late 80's early 90's Mercedes unit
