are the contis considered upgrades of the Goodyear?
I honestly don't know. Mine are Michelins, Load Range E, 245/75R17. I was happy to see Michelins on it and have been very pleased with their performance. That said, I've not personally heard anything bad about the Contis. Others might be able to speak to that and if they're considered an upgrade or not.
I have a 2017 F250 PSD SRW CCSWB. It came with the 20" Michelin tires. I have NEVER had a tire pick up and hold so many dammed rocks, then sling them out at highway speeds, like these tires do. Conversely, they do really well in sand and cold temps. Don't ask anything from them in real mud though. And did I mention how they throw rocks out?
They tow really well. I can air them down and get some great sidewall flex and then, air them back up without issues. Some tires have sidewall cracking under those circumstances. But damn. These tires hold onto rocks and sling them out at highway speeds like CRAZY!

Same here brother. I'm about two weeks away from affording to pay for some different rubber. These Michelin tires really suck. I drive down too many back roads, trails and construction sites to deal with this. Got some rear wheel well liners on order because I've yet to dent my bed, but don't wanna take that chance. Yet these tires do so well in deep sand it's crazy! But come mud or rocks, these tires SUCK.
I had the AT2's on my '12 F-250 and they had 60K on them when I traded in. Tires still had another year on them. As stated above, most of my miles were hwy/towing. When my Goodyear Kevlars wear out, I'll replace them with the AT2's.
I asked the dealer exact same question. Was told it's the same tire, with the letters either inside (cheaper) or outside (more expensive). All trucks on the lot came with OWL on the outside, but you could order cheaper option, and Ford will mount the same tire on the truck, with OWL on the inside. He also told me that with FX4 package, it's going to be either Michelin AT2 or GoodYear Wrangler.
I am not sure this is true, but it is what the dealer said, so take it with a grain of salt.
You can specify the base tire which is A/S, or A/T black sidewall, or A/T outlined white letter. Ford does not mount an outlined white letter tire with the white letters inside. It is indeed the same exact tire, but there is no white outlined letters on the tire at all.

No, the Continentals are the base-spec tires. All other tire options are upgrades of it. That doesn't mean the Conti's are bad tires nor does it mean they only go on "cheap" trucks. My 2016 King Ranch diesel 4x4 came with these same Continentals. I've also had them come on my 2012 gas XLT 4x4. My opinion is that they are quiet, competent in the rain, terrible in snow or off-road, and wear like iron. Most of these trucks end up with the Michelin LTX AT2. I've had three Super Duty's with these tires. Nice looking tire, good wearing, only marginally better in snow or off-road than the Conti's. In my opinion, the Wrangler Adventure w/ Kevlar that comes on FX4 trucks or other trucks specifically optioned that way is easily the best "factory" tire option for the current Super Duty. BUT, I'm not sure you can get it if your truck has 20" wheels (you'll likely have the Michelin even with the FX4 option).
Be aware of different tire sizes in the 18" range as well. There are two sizes...a 275x65x18 and a 275x70x18. The second choice is about an inch taller in diameter and makes the truck set up better. Most of the Continental tires seem to be the 275x65 size which is the shorter size. You will get a hair better acceleration and fuel economy with the smaller tire, but the 70-series is taller and fits these trucks better. They looked so ridiculous on my King Ranch I sold them and put BFG KO2 35x12.5x18 tires on the stock rims...much better!
