Yesterday Evening on my way home I needed fuel, I almost past the last gas station and made a pretty swift and fast right turn into the parking lot of the gas station. The truck "calmly" died. I started it up drove to the fuel pump, turned it off, fueled up, started it up and drove about a mile down the rode and it "calmly" stalled again. Started it back up and drove it about 15 miles home without any issues. Parked it overnight and tried starting it for work this morning with no luck.It turns over and it actually sounds like the starter is turning faster than normal. I haven't had time to take a look at it at all but was hoping to get some suggestions to look at for when I get home this evening. Also when I say "calmly" I mean there was no spitting or sputtering, it just slowly shut down and the throttle had no response or anything.
Ive ordered the bluetooth scan tool hopefully it'll read whats going on. I use the flow chart for the rest of my life. What a great tool. Thanks for that. I plan on checking my fuses, and my fuel bowl first. If my fuel bowl is low of fuel how do I eliminate the fuel tank selector switch being the issue?
I got home and went buy the flow chart. The wait to start light comes on. Seems to be normal amount of time. Tach meter gets up to about 200 rpm. The fuel bowl is completely full .The oil is topped off .I looked around for loose sensors or wires and haven't seen any. Any more ideas? I can't read any codes until that scanner gets here.
what is fuel pressure while cranking?
does oil pressure gauge read anything while cranking and come up fast?
Could try swapping CPS, not a bad idea to have a spare and 10mm wrench in glove box.
I'll have to do some research on how to check the fuel pressure, that's something I have never done before. Any good videos or how to sheets on that?
The oil pressure gauge has always went from dead zero to half way in the gauge.
I've read about the CPS and planned on changing it out just to try.
This is my first diesel truck(other than 10 years of Army Humvees as an operator) and I've been told I got one of the best. I'm trying to learn as much as possible because its just not the same as a SBC.
tire pressure guage 0-100 PSI and press it on the fitting on fuel bowl while cranking engine
oil pressure going to half way in a few seconds? remember its just a switch and not pressure
The oil pressure gauge has always jumped up to halfway instantly after starting the engine. I'll have to take a look and see if it does anything while trying to start.
The oil pressure gauge is just a idiot gauge in that 6psi of oil pressure activates it to jump up to halfway. You'll have to install a 'real' gauge to see what its reading.
