Last night I went to install my new AFE Cold Air intake in my truck and as soon as I pulled off OEM tube to intake. I noticed a small puddle of oil and oily residue in the intake tube. Is this normal? Also air filter has was pretty dirty with some slight oily dust mostly towards the bottom of the filter. Is this normal? Truck has 25K miles and this the first air filter change. Do I need to put OEM intake back on and take to dealer. Truck is running great.
You should have the dealer look at that. I had the same problem with a 1988 f250 with the 5.8 gasser, back in the day. Dealer said that the rings never seated in the cylinders, they replaced the engine under warranty.
Isn't the blow-by plumbed back into the engine, before the turbo on new 6.7's?
If so, it's normal for the blow by to be very oily. That air filter is toast. Pulling a vacuum there sure as heck ain't going to help. I'd try just replacing the AF more often with the stock plenum.
There is a crancase vent around where the residue is. The filter looks worse then it actually was. The outside was pretty drirty but the pleats were not horrible. Also I took a pic of the worst side of the filter. I did inspect the filter every oil change, manual said it should be good for 30k miles I changed it at 25k. Also the vacuume gauge had not popped either is was still green. Do you think the dealer will try to blame Cold Air Intake for problem. It literally has been on for one hour. If so I can put stock air cleaner back on but I dont know how to explain how I found the problem with out telling them that I took tube off for Cold Air Intake install.
FYI ask anyone here to pull their intake and you will see the same residue. It's on all the fleet trucks I service also that filter while dirty looks to have plenty of life left in it and probably didn't even budge the filter minder.
Ok I just wanted to make sure it was normal for the residue to be there. It made sense to me that is was supoosed to be there, I did check the oil level last nigt and oil level is normal. Its never been low at oil changes so I think Im ok. I think im just hyper sensistive since im coming up on my 3yr/36k warranty, lol.
On a better note I'm pleasently surprised with the AFE Momentum HD intake. Truck feels slightly more peppy. The truck does not feel faster but does feel more responsive like the intake aids in turbo spool up. The power of these trucks is just so damn impressive. Last night it was chirping the tires in second gear while rolling.
Unfortunaly no, not really. I tried windows up and down and could not really hear a difference but I could feel one. I likend the difference in feeling to driving with under inflated tires vs over inflated tires. They both get 70 mph eventually just feels like with intake the truck does it easier. I was hoping for more sound, maybe a hint of turbo whine but nada. I did a CAI on 05 F150 and a turbo charged 2L escape and on both of those I could hear a slight difference.
I'm not really suprised by not hearing sound though when you look at the kit vs stock box. They both basically leave the filter in the same spot and have the same amount of plastic and tube length and pull air from the same spot. The other kits I installed made significant changes to the air intake design shorting tubes and pulling air from different locations so change in sound was expected. The AFE does make one change to the intake that probably improves performance. I learned a lot from the install, normally the stock box sucks air from at the top of the engine bay under the hood on passenger side. What I never relized is that then it is routed down behind the head light then under the battery and into the bottom of the stock box. The AFE kit has 2 version. The base version replaces the box but does not replace the tube going down behind the headlight and under the battery. But you can buy a RAM-air version that has the same box replacement but adds a second piece that replaces the intake tube that goes down behind the headlight. The ram air version still routes air down behind the headlight but has a second tube that routes over the battery straight into the top of the air box. So air can simultaniously go over and undee the battery the same time. This is the version I bought and probabaly helps more then just base kit.
I did have 2 small problems with kit. First I felt like the new location for the mass air flow sensor stretches the wire too much for comfort. It reaches but just barely. Second the hood did not close perfectly because it hit the new ram air tube. I trimed about an 1/8 inch plastic off the top of the opening of the tube and it fixed the problem. Just FYI.
