Question Turbo Cool Down Timer Recommendations?

I have been reading a lot about the importance of cooling down the EGT's to about 300 degrees before shutdown.
I make frequent in town stops with my 2002 PSD and am tired of waiting for the EGT's to cool down to 300 before exiting the truck.
Can anyone recommend a cool down timer? I have seen a few on line but quality looks questionable.
Is it worth the cost?
I don't want a full blown security system just to get the cool down timer portion.
Can anyone recommend a simple programmable cool down timer?
Please provide names and or links if possible.
Thanks!

Turbo Cool Down Timer Recommendations?

IMO it's better to let them idle, opposed to stopping/starting frequently, assuming of course your frequent stops are not for long periods. That said, let me give you an alternative. I've got a system from DEI, alarm/keyless entry/remote start. One feature I love is, if I make a stop and feel that I need to lock my doors, I can let the truck idle and take my keys with me. If I get tied up, the engine will shut down in 20 min. This system is safe also. If the keys are out, the steering wheel is locked and if the brake pedal is touched, which you must to put it in gear, the engine shuts down. Idle controls are great, but you get more bang for the buck with a setup like this.

You say you may not be interested in a system like this, but it's worth some thought, they are not all that expensive if you install yourself.

Is it part of a full blown security system with paging, alarms, windows, etc?
Did you install it yourself?
I like the idea of locking out the steering.
I'll do a search for DEI.
Thanks for the input!

Mine just has keyless entry/remote start/alarm. No window controls (would be nice tho) and no paging.

This system has a ton of wiring, not too difficult, just time consuming.

Has anyone tried this unit?

DEI makes Clifford, Viper, etc. Viper has the 790XV Responder(look in my sig). This works great and the run time is completely adjustable at the place of install. Mine is set for 12 minutes but can run anywhere from 1-30. Mine was purchased at Tweeter. Has many, many features that can be added on later very easily. Worth a look.

Directed Electronics- 790XV Responder

Haven't tried the unit you posted a link to, but the full blown alarm is not that much more. Also, looks like that unit has a choice between either 1 minute or three minutes...
Clifford also has a Responder alarm, and maybe more a DEI's lines do to. All the same, just a different label.

How does a remote start work with a diesel? Can you program it for the wait to start?

Some of DEI's units have wait to start built in. Follow crashandburn's link and check them out. In particular Viper's 550 DSP.

That is a pretty good feature (shuts down after 20 mins). I guess a remote starter would be nice to warm up the diesel when it is cold in the mornings.

Most of the time I just carry a spare remote and just let it run.

I just had the Viper 790xv installed. I thought that great wait to start feature was going to be perfect untill after the install when Circuit City told me they had to order a special part (a delay timer) for the viper remote start to work with me deisel.

I like the delay on shutdown feature of a lot of these units. What I went with instead is a Pre-Luber. It is an electric pump that starts running when you turn on your ignition and pressurizes the oil system. So you have oil pressure before you even turn over your motor. No wear on startup! And when you shut the truck down you can program the pump to run for a set time to bring down engine/turbo temps by circulating the oil. So if you are a little hot on shutdown you don't worry because oil will circulate for as long as you have the preluber set for.

Michael013,
You say you carry a spare remote. Does that mean you can leave your truck running and use a remote to unlock it while it is running? I tested mine last night and the remote does not seem to work if the engine is running. Is that not the case for some of you? I guess I could probably carry an extra key which I surely think would work.

Try putting your alarm in Valet mode. Then you should be able to unlock the doors with the remote, or keep a spare key with you at all times.

Looks like we all agree that a cool down function is a great idea for our PSD's.

Am I to understand that the only devices out there for cool down timers are those that are incorporated into security systems?

Surely there is a simple cool down timer out there for a PSD similar to the timers that the rice burners use for their turbo cool downs?

Thanks all for your input!
