spare tire options?

What options are out there for mounting a spare tire? In the factory location and bed mount are the only ones I see. I have been contemplating finding a setup with a hoist, like my 4runner or basically anything newer.

Anyone done something like that so I can copy?

If you are getting rid of your OEM behind the rear axle carrier, let me know. My spare is just in the bed right now.

Thanks, I wish I would have seen that when it was first posted. I have been watching e-bay for one for a few weeks with no luck. Its nice to have the OEM part numbers, though.

My personal favorite is swapping a Bronco swing-away spare carrier onto the back of an F-150. I am going to be doing this swap on '85 longbed in the near future. I saw a guy that had put a front hub on the carrier so he had an extra hub should he need it out in the wild as well. (Mine's a 2wd so that wouldn't be a great idea for the F-150 but I am considering it on my Bronco...)

You could go old schcool and mount it up front. It would make it easier if you had a bull bar or brush guard.

There are also replacement tailgates that the "off-road" crew uses to store the spare tire and a jerry can.

I had that arrangement for several years. Even had the tire cover with ducks in it, similar to this:

https://tirecovers.com/ducks-in-flight-tire-cover.html

Went great with my sandals and black socks, too. I was styling.

Alas, the location caused overheating on hot days. I had to scrounge up a factory set up and mount the spare under the rear gas tank. No more overheating.

One thing to consider is how often have you needed the spare? In 25 years, my truck has had exactly one flat. Even with the later model winch set up, you're still going to get plenty dirty changing a flat. You're not going to get that much dirtier wrestling a tire to the ground from an earlier carrier.

Very true. Right now my truck doesn't even have a spare. I need some missing parts for my spare tire carrier. Let's hope I don't need one.

I thought of mounting it up front because I drove a Dentside as a teenager at Scout Camp. It had the spare mounted up front. Of course, we always just puttered around so there wasn't much chance of over heating.

I think I'm the only one that likes my setup...(Do a search for pictures)..but I used a BAJA mount up next to the front of the bed. Tire is at an angle..easy in and out. takes up some bed space..but..when is last time you used the entire bed floor ??
