Remount Spare Tire

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I'm looking for a way to hang the spare tire under the frame, behind the rear axle... questions:

1. What year was the spare first hung underneath?
2. Is that the best way to go?
3. Or is there an aftermarket product that's better way?
And...
4. Will this prevent me from getting the gas tank out of the cab later on?

Thanks!

Remount Spare Tire

Your truck should have had it mounted there from the factory(probably been removed) as I had a 1969 F 100 that had the spare mounted under there. I personnally prefer to mount two spares in the rear portion of the bed(on both sides), this keeps them readily available and you don't have to crawl in the mud to get one. I used the mounts off a 1985 Chevy blazer(hey you gotta find some use for a Chevy). I had to modify one side, but it works.
As for the gas tank, find a similar year Camper special(I got rid of one a couple of years ago), be sure to cut, or drill, the tank mounts off the frame(their riveted) and it will all bolt up between the frame rail and the driveshaft, right beside the tranny. Be sure to get the fill tube and cover that bolts in the bed(I do still have one of those covers). This is a fairly easy mod to do, but if you need help, let me know.
This tank mod will still allow you to mount the spare in it's proper place. I drive on some pretty rough roads( I use the term loosely) here in Alaska, so I like to keep my spares readily available. I also carry a plug and patch kit and air compressor.

I'm with Highboy on this one. Don't mount the spare underneath, unless you just want it to look stock and unless you just want to crawl under in the mud when you have to change a flat. Cause that will happen. Put it in the bed or use a drop-hitch attachment to hang it off the front or rear. Lots easier.

Remount Spare Tire

First year was 1948...Bonus built truck with the spare tire mounted underneath. Most people took the spare tire "out of there!" and just left it in the bed or no spare at all. In fact, because of that, it is really hard to find the parts that put he spare in the "Stock" position. I have a restored 48 which has the spare underneath and am restoring a 67 with the spare "soon to be" underneath....but I really do not expect to change the spare....jim

Remount Spare Tire

Thanks for all the info... I don't drive in the mud that often, I live in South Texas and we don't get a lot of rain down here Besides, my truck doesn't get driven everyday. I don't care for the look of the spare sticking up out of the bed, and don't want to be without one, so I guess I'll try and find a junker I can steal the under the frame mount off of... maybe I'll get lucky and find a Camper Special with the gas tank under the bed as well!!

Thanks again...

Remount Spare Tire

I put the spare underneath because my slide - in camper wont fit with it in the bed,
i couldnt find the cradle that goes under there,so i used a couple of 3/8 inch galvanized carriage bolts through the bottom of the bed (mine is checkerplate steel) and a couple of pieces of1x4 between the tire and the bopttom of the bed to keep it from working loose.
