We had a 1972 Ford Maverick that the starter chewed the teeth
off the ring gear so badly we had to replace it. If would not start
somes times, You had to go out pop the hood and hand turn the
engine over by pulling on the fan belt to get to a good spot.
I got a 6.4 starter from DB electircal for $83 including shipping. So far it works great, but only has been on the truck for a week. We'll see what happens. I have bought small starters for 4 wheelers from them before and had good luck with them. The difference is amazing.
Also, as much of a pain as it is, I did put all 3 bolts back in.
I just put a Napa reman (NAE 6675S) on my 04 F250 6.0. The starter hung up on the flywheel! The starter teeth now look like the one pictured above, after 3 starts! Anyone ever come across this? Now I'm wondering if I should exchange it for another, or get something different!
I think if I was going to replace my starter, I would just get one from Autozone. The Motorcraft starter has a 12 month warranty and would probably last longer........But when it fails after that, you buy another one.........
Even if the Autozone "Duralast" starter failed after 1 year every year.........., They would replace it every year until the truck went to the junk yard. (and then replace it on the "new " truck every thereafter!!)
Ditto for batteries from WalMart. I bought a couple 20 months ago for my shuttle bus and when I got back on that project this week, they were bad. Took to WM and got brand new batteries for free. They only had 2 year warranties.
