I had the intermitent wiper problems and replaiced the wiper run/park relay and the problem went away. Hope this $5 fix works. Its been a little over a month.
Its in the engine compartment. Its relay JJ in my Ranger and as your looking at the power distrabution box its the bottem (towards the front)right relay
Many early model Rangers had a simple CTM (central timer module) rather than a GEM, as they did not have power group. Ford had so many problems with the CTM, specifically with ghost wipers, that they fixed the problem by replacing the CTM with a GEM. Models 99 and up require the Tire/Axle ratio programmed into them for correct speedometer operation. Earlier models require no programming.
Ghost wipers on later models are generally a problem with the multifunction switch, and was problematic on virtually all the Ford line. Be sure to check the connectors for melted or pulled out pins as well.
Hey, That sounds like a problem I have. Every once in awhile my wipers will just turn on. Cycle once or twice and turn off. I was told it could be the resistance switch? Going in wednesday to get it looked at. I also noticed that sometimes the turn signal doesnt cancel or blink it stays on in the "blink" position. Once I am sure that I saw smoke from the steering column????
It has only happened a couple of times.

I finally broke down and took my truck to a local repair shop to get the wiper problem sorted out. As I suspected and what I had learned from this forum, it was the GEM module. The module itself was $197.00 plus installation. It wasn't cheap, but at least I now drive my truck in the rain and snow for which I bought it. It also fixed a few other probems like the dome lights and a few of the dash lights.
