I know this is an old thread but when a guy has a question, why start a new thread on a subject already addressed but new questions arise? I have a GARMIN GPS with a wireless backup camera that performs beautifully even at night. The problem I have is the mounting bracket for the camera is flimsy and cheep. It's mounted on the top edge of the license plate dead center. I have to be extra careful standing in the area that I don't bump into it and bend the stupid little bracket. Especially loading anything in the back. I've always wondered if a license plate camera would work. Calling GARMIN, they say that no after market camera is compatible but maybe thats because they want to sell their own product. What do you guys think? Any ideas are helpful...

No idea, but if you feel adventurous, you could always buy a different camera and trying splicing the cables to the original unit and see if it works. That is if the camera cable hook ups are different or hard wired to your original unit. Can't imagine their being too many different cables for the camera itself, say the power cable, and the one yellow video cable. The camera I bought for my EX was based on a thread I found in the forum. Can't remember which thread it was, but it has worked out for me, but mine is connected to my aftermarket radio. The camera is cheap, you can test it and see. Here is the link to the one I got from Amazon.
Had to re-read your post several times to make sure that I was understanding your situation. The bracket for my backup system is pretty weak and has been bent out of shape several times by careless family members. It doesn't help that the wireless transmitter is built into my camera, so the whole unit is kind of bulky and physically larger than what is currently available today. Not sure you'd want to hack a newer, smaller camera into your current system so you may be better off just re-engineering the bracket. If that doesn't sound like a good option, then just replace it with something that fits your needs. Either way, you gotta get creative and spend time, money, or both. How good are your soldering capabilities?

I appreciate you're using the search feature, but you posted in a 9 year old thread.
Even though your question was related to the thread you posted in (both are about backup cam's) it's almost always a better idea to start your own thread so your own problem can be addressed without muddying the waters, so-to-speak.
Again, awesome you're using the search feature, but please start new threads for questions about your truck.
