I’m looking to replace the entire shortbed on my 1996 Ford F-250 diesel, due to the excessive rust on the lip of the wheel wells. I was told this would be a more effective and efficient way to remedy this, vs. buying replacement panels and having them welded in.
Are the 1987-1996 shortbeds all the same in shape?
One thing different I noticed on the one I found from a 1987 model, is that it only has one fuel door vs. the dual doors I have on my 1996. I’m thinking this could be a very minor adjustment.
Please advise, as I’m thinking the deal I found could be a very good route to go with a replacement for only $150-$200 for the complete bed.
The beds on any 1987-1996 are all the same design, they should bolt right up no problem. Obviously make sure you get the correct fuel door arrangement (1 or 2 doors) depending on what you have right now. Even a 1980-1986 would bolt up, however the styling is not the same and it wouldn't match.
Problem with replacing the box is that if you live in a rust prone area and your wheel lips are rusted through, chances are very high that every box you find will have some degree of the same affliction. If your floor remains rust free, I would seriously consider changing the wheelhouses and wheel opening repair panels.
Importing rust free parts from another area can get expensive
On the fuel door, I think patching in a second fuel door is as much work as replacing a rusted wheel lip, so there really is no gain here.
