Have a question on my 2016 F350 SD with 6.2L
I have done some searches on here for Trailer Braking effort. Is there any where in the Ford manuals that states what trailer weights are used for the 3 settings Low/Med/High?
I have a couple trailers I pull & took me forever to figure out which trailer required what settings. Would have been nice to read in the manual that Low is good for small trailers up to 2000lbs, Med good for 2-8000lbs, & High above 8000lbs. Does anybody have any info on this??
I always set to how the truck feels to the weight that I am towing. I manually apply the trailer brakes to see how hard they hit and if they can stop my truck on a slow roll. Dont want the trailer to pass me but I like the feel of the trailer dragging me a bit under normal braking. Just my 2 Cents
I start at Medium-5. Then work up or down from there to get the desired braking effect. If I get to Medium-10 then switch to High-5 and try again.
So far, my toy hauler and little ATV trailer are close to the same settings, off by a couple numbers on the gain. When the ATV trailer is empty I essentially turn off the trailer brake controller. Otherwise, I smoke the tires every time I touch the brakes.
Yes this is how Ive had to figure out my trailers aswell. Would have been nice if Ford actually came out with ratings for the settings so it wasn't so much time setting up your truck.
I have two completely different trailers that i use daily. One is 3,000 lbs the other is 7,000 lbs.
I adjust mine to where the truck stops like there isnt a trailer behind it. So the trailer handles itself.
I believe i just leave mine on high and just adjust the gain up or down....which is usually around 7.
