I'm looking for a good dependable code reader for a Ford Ranger. I'm a DIY, who goes to youtube for help alot, so no expert by any means and not planning on taking on any large projects. I'd like to get an analyzer some where in the $100 range or less that will work well for my 1996 Ranger 3.0L. There are too many out there to choose from and seeking advise on what to get and what to avoid. She has made it this far without one but has me thinking it's time to get a reader and maybe avoid a towing if I can get some meaningful codes. Thanks for any suggestions.
Torque Pro for android is like $5, not sure if it works on Apple stuff. It will read codes and clear them plus more.
I use it with a tablet -- will work on a kindle although it always wants the nonexistent GPS on so that it can measure acceletration.
Works with bluetooth. They recommend a specific OBD2 -bluetooth adapter, but I think that its fairly spendy. I found one on Amazon for $25 or so. (Check for good ratings -- there's some junk out there. )
You CAN (and I do) set up gauges for all kinds of stuff - rpm/ coolant temp/IAT and more -- what's available might depend a little bit on your truck. So you can get better info while you're driving. Caution -- if you are grabbing too much data ( too many gauges), it can cause an OBD2 error because the PCM gets too busy and misses something. I've never had it cause any serious issues, but I've now removed the O2 sensor gaug anh haven't had issues in a while.
You can also log various data items and transfer it to your computer after you shut down. Probably only geeks like me do that
Have fun whatever you get,
I have DashBoss, ScanGauge11 and ForScan. Forscan (IOS and Android but Ford Products Only) can read a few more things than Torque Pro (Android. Ford ,Chevy, Dodge ect).DashBoss (IOS only)is a great tool for watching displays but it and scangauge (Has its own display no other device needed) do not read DTC very well and both cost around $130.00 +/-. ForScan is great at displays and DTC reading. Cost $5.00 plus around $20.00 for ELM device.
