I rebuilt my c4 transmission a few months ago and got the truck on the road. I replaced clutches band seals clads modulator and added a shift kit etc.
I put about 300 miles on it so far. THEN!
Driving home it would shift into Drive (third I guess) it would be like neutral. Stop checked fluid nice cherry color not burnt smell and enough fluid. Drove home slowly in 2nd gear.
This morning I made sure fulid was full and add a little check band adjustment (Torque to 10 foot lbs back out so many turns) Made sure I had vacuum and vacuum modeluator and it did.
Took it for a drive now wont shift from 1st to 2nd but will shift from 1st to 2nd manually but still no 3rd?

What type of ATF did you use? 1964/76 C4 & 1966/76 C6: Type F / 1977 and later C4 & C6: Mercon.
So wasn’t sure what else to do so I dropped the pan and valve body. Had some black stuff in the magnet in he pan and some silver flakes in the pan.
All valves move but did find a coupe of chunks in the filter and the two shavings from the valve body.
Guess I’ll drop the trans to investigate further.
Not sure if I want to spend more money on the c4 or try to come up the funds for a aod or aode swap.
Had a little more time and looked further into trans. Found that a snap ring came off allow the shaft the governern is on (output shaft?) to move and hit against the tail housing.
So now what?
Replace gonverner and the burnt band and hope it’s ok?
Start fresh with a AOD or 4r70W?
Ok as I talk to myself
I ordered a replacement governor, band, gaskets and a universal drain plug kit. I hope I get it right this time and this C4 stays together for me.
Gonna go ahead a order a stall converter. Thing I'm gonna get a Hughes one from summit like a 2500 stall? Any other recommendations?
There are people here reading the forums but, like me, might not have much to contribute. It sounds like you did a great job of identifying there was a problem, preventing excess damage by taking it out of service when the problem was noticed, and performing exploratory surgery to identify the main cause. Right now, you're the expert. The C4 is a really old model and not a lot of people work on them anymore so I don't expect many people to respond. Most have moved on to newer, computer controlled equipment. The C4 does share a lot of the basics with the C6 (which I have rebuilt) so everything sounds familiar. Props to you for figuring it out!
About the stall speed, why are you looking to change it from stock (likely 1600-1800 range)?
Thank you Braggs.
I have a 302 roller motor in the truck plan adding a cam and maybe some trick flow heads down the road and most cams from what I was ready recommend a stall converter.
Sounds like a good candidate for a higher stall speed. Won't make a very comfy daily driver but it'll wow (or annoy) the other drivers/spectators in spirited cruises on the weekends.
Good job diagnosing the problem. When I rebuilt my C4 I had the one way clutch rollers in wrong, and it also destroyed the modulator, but its been good for a few years now after replacing those items and getting it back together. I hope your results are the same and you get many years of service out of it, I like the C4. Good luck
So I got the stall and most of the parts just need the governor I had ordered it from a place with the other parts ends up they didnt have it. Found some on ebay just got order it.
I cleaned up most of the parts just need have the vavle body to clean.

The cleaning is the most tedious part, If you haven't already, you may consider putting a magnet in the bottom of the pan to catch any small pieces of metal.
