The cleaning is the most tedious part, If you haven't already, you may consider putting a magnet in the bottom of the pan to catch any small pieces of metal.
Yes, so much cleaning. scraping off 30 year old gasket material from the valve body sandwich. So much time...
Also, magnets only catch the steel, not aluminum (what the case and valve body is made of).
Well got everything cleaned up and the trans put back together. Just gotta put the bell housing on and its ready to be installed!
Gonna get some new u joint also.
Also last time I put trans in my brother in law was here to help this time gonna be by myself so gotta rig up a tranny jack. Found some good DIY ideas hope it works out
I'm curious to know which shift kit you installed, and what you thought of it? I'm rebuilding my 4.9L 300 right now (basically stock rebuild), and I am entertaining the idea of pulling the trans for thorough inspection, cleaning, and possible rebuild. I've never used a shift kit, and I'm not sure if it's desired/beneficial for a stock truck. Thanks for the feedback!
I hope you get yours back on the road soon, and don't have issues for 300k miles, and not just 300 !!!
I installed a B&M shift kit. The install was easy and straight forward. I did the Street/strip

Well not sure what i messed up on this time. Has drive sometimes and slips really bad. Im done think im gonna pull trans and take it to a shop to have them go threw it.
O well!
Ok trans was rebuilt by the shop and picked up yesterday the clutches were detroyed I guess i used a wrong seal on one of them and it also ate up some other parts. So heading into the garage to install the transmission.
So to close this thread out well I hope. Got the transmission in yesterday and filled up with fluid. Drove the truck up the road and all seems fine. The trans shop wants me to bring the truck by there shop so they can make sure it’s working properly and then will give me a 12 month warranty.
