Towing performance question

hey guys! I recently picked up a 2000 7.3 to replace my 2003 suburban 5.3 gasser as a tow pig. I was expecting superior acceleration mpg while towing and handling. I got better handling. 1 out of 3 aint bad right??? Lol
im trying to figure out what im doing wrong. Im towing around 10500 travel trailer on mostly flat ground rolling hills. My speed is generally between 57-63 mph. Installed Gearhead tune before i started towing. In heavy tow tunei get about 6 mpg. In daily driver/tow/econ i get 8-9. All out tune maybe 9.5. My egts were around 10-11 pretty consistent and oil temp was 200-215 and trans fluid was 165-190. That sound normal? I did not turn overdrive off.
Not towing, just In and around town in econ tune i get about 13. I was getting 16.5 around town before tune.
I used to tow this exact setup with a 1500 suburban 5.3l and get 9.5-10. I upgraded to the 7.3 diesel tuned it, upgraded torque convertor to triple disk and now i get less mpg towing than a small gasser. Im trying to figure out what im missing. Something doesnt seem right to me. Any ideas? Do i need to drive differently?

You sure you don't have a 6.8 in your X? LOL That sounds like about what I get.

Any mods, other than the tuner? Are you hand calculating your MPG?

Hand calc yes. I did torque convertor and tune. Previous owner did exhaust, turbo wheel, air filter mod, some other odds and ends. Stock hpop. Stock injectors. Garrett turbo. Runs great. Tested injectors all set. Everything seems like it runs like it should.

Have you checked for any fault codes with a proper reader? Scangauge, Autoengenuity, etc? Some do not throw a CEL.

Well here's my base line with T6 chip 75hp. I use archoil in my fuel and archoil in my oil. 3:73 gears, 275x65R20's Michelins, 4' exhaust, 6637 intake mod stock injectors, stock turbo, original tranny some minor engine mods that shouldn't affect mileage. My mileage has always been good. When I tow I rarely exceed 65 mph. I no longer check mileage and use my lie-o-meter as reference, which by the way was close. All numbers on flat ground except the car haul trailer with my wife's Highlander... that is a 815 mile trip from FL to TN (average). I do check this one each time. Pretty consistent.

Highway at 70 mph (1900 rpm) on flat ground empty... 21.3
Towing my 7.5K center console boat...................................13.1
Towing my car haul trailer with wife's Highlander full of stuff 7K (guess) 15.3
Towing my 10K TT 12.8 loaded...

Do you get black smoke?
This extreme difference suggest something is blocked or restricted.

No black smoke. Tires are 285/70/17.
I was expecting numbers like yours.
Something is not adding up.

Specifics will be better..What type of exhaust? what is the air filter mod? What turbo wheel? How did you test the injectors? How many miles on your truck? What are your boost numbers? Could have a leak in the system and not be building the correct boost numbers.

a 4” turbo backexhaust mod of some sort
6637 filter kit
200k
buzz test on injectors And something on the computer
boost varies as you depress the skinny pedal. I have seen boost over 30 at WOT. will commonly exceed 20 under heavy acceleration pretty easily
clay turbo wheel
fuel rail crossover
waste gate delete

Moving this over to the 7.3L forum because there are so many things that can cause your situation, and you're gonna need the vast specific knowledge of the 7.3L PSD brotherhood to help you clear the mud.

Step 1 - yank that chip.

Step 2 - lets get some data logging going on with Torque Pro, FORScan, or the like.

I pull heavy in the mountains and average 12 MPG while towing. We need to get the stock configuration to 100% before reaching for permagrin.

Ok yes. I will get something. Can you give me a link to the “right” obd tool? Also if there is an old tablet or something that makes sense to connect to it. I may be able to find that cheap at pawn or online....

I did travel 246 miles today. I set the hydra to stock mode and saw between eight and nine Mpg. I know this is not log data but it’s a little bit more info.
