When I was restoring my '66 F250, I found two chalk marks (actually grease pencil), that said "115" One on the fire wall, the other on the top, inside of dash board. Is there any significant to these numbers? Is it a code for Custom Cab or Camper Special? Or just random? Just wondering!
I can't answer your question, but I can tell you mine has "171" written in the same place. The truck's DSO is 71, which might just be a coincidence.
My Canadian-built Merc had no mark in that area, but had the paint code 8M-2 written in grease pencil in the centre of the firewall.

That is what is referred to as the ROT or "Rotation" number. Each truck would get one. It's the number from the upper left corner of the build sheet, if you have one. Here you can see on this particular truck the ROT number is 0152. Maximum number for any given day would be 9999, which gave them plenty of space. Mine is 0152 on 08C or Tuesday, March 08, 1966. The next working day the 0152 would be reused for a truck scheduled on 09C and so on, and so on...
They would apply that number to the various major parts of the truck to agree with the ROT number. I've seen the numbers on the bed, cab, fenders, gas tank and instrument cluster, at least.
Back end of bed - this is a 4x4 with optional reflectors - on 2x4 trucks it is often found on front of bed between bed and cab.
Underneath the reflector - the "1" got erased since it was not fully covered by the reflector.
Cab firewall where it is often found.
Top of gas tank just behind driver. How often was this one washed away?
Top of instrument cluster
Back end of bed - this is my 4x4 red truck. ROT number was 0112.
