well I caught a rock on the highway, bottom in the center, about 1/4” lower it would have hit the wiper. Reached up and snapped a quick picture as my insurance will repair chips at no cost to me. Called my Agent right after and as I was getting off the highway I hit a bump and the windshield popped and cracked about 8” across the windshield so it looks like I’ll be getting a windshield soon. Was quoted $448 at the local glass shop for a Ford windshield. He said there is a part number out there but no availability to him of an aftermarket windshield. Think I may wait a few months
for those to be released as it seems these trucks attract rocks lol. He said an aftermarket will cost me around $330.
I had the same thing here in GA, and had Safelite come to my house and install a Ford OEM windshield for the cost of my deductible. I think it depends which insurance co you have also.
Why isn't it free? In Fl if you have full coverage ins. It's free.
Full coverage does not mean free but some insurance companies offer windshield fix or replacement as part of the policy or it`s a minimal extra cost fee for this coverage.
As the other poster mentioned, you`ll still have to pay up to the amount of your deductible but you`re also taking a chance on your rates going up by filing a claim so if the policy does not cover it, it`s best just to take the hit and pay out of pocket.
If you have comprehensive coverage then it should be just the deductible that you pay. Of course if your deductible is $500 then it's a moot point with a $448 windshield. FWIW I don't think comp. claims are a "strike".
I can't believe how many of us have experienced these over sensitive windshields. There is tons of posts on it and I am on my third in a year.
Windshields are not unto themselves any different or weaker than they were decades ago. What has changed is windshields are a stressed component and provide rigidity to the body structure. This is why they are mounted with urethane instead of the old days where they were sealed using butyl tape in the windshield channel. Having the windshield as a stressed component of the body helps in crash worthiness. But, yeah, the downside is a rock chip quickly turns into a big crack. Again, in the old days, a rock chip would likely forever stay as just a chip. You lose a bit of crash worthiness when you motor around with a cracked windshield, so it's one of those things you'd want to replace.
Also, im my experience, one can choose a zero deductible on glass. But, like stated previously, nothing is “free”!!!! And all insurance is just a legal wager! Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose......mostly in THEIR favor or they wouldn’t be in business!!!
