Does anyone else have a gnome who lives under their truck and hammers on things?
On loaded accelleration (ie, heavy engine lead like first taking off from a stoplight or accelerating up a hill) it sounds like someone is hammering on sheet metal under my truck. The rhythm is slow and not at all related to engine speed. I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. All u-joints seem to be in good shape, no rubbing of tires that I can find... I just have no clue. I'll try and shoot a video later tonight.

I just found him today - after replacing my transmission chasing the noise...
Could be exhaust hitting someplace when the engine torques, could also be caused by a bad motor mount or tranny mount.
X2. That's what I would look at. Especially the driver's side motor mount. If it's bad, under hard acceleration, the motor can actually lift off of the mount. If there's close clearance on something like the exhaust, that could allow it to contact the frame, cross-member or body and make the sound you're describing.

Does it do this only in Gear, or doesn't matter if in P/N or in Gear? x3 on suggestion of checking motor mounts and trans mount.
my old muffler was a really long slim one and when i had it replaced with a flowmaster 50 it would rattle against the old heat shield so i took the old one off. motor mounts and transmission mounts would be a good one to check. I know my engine moves alot more when its under a load.
does anyone know if tightening the mounts will help if the rubber is a little flattened or should you replace it?
Thanks so much for all the info. I haven't got a change to shoot video yet. But it does sound like drivers side. The thing is it isn't one clang. It's clang clang clang till you eaxe up on the throttle.
No it doesn't do it in park. only under load. And again it's not related to rpm or engine speed. But load. The more the motor is torqued up the more likely it is to happen.
i suppose I could aim a GoPro at the engine mount sand drive around and see.
As others have pointed out, worn motor mounts can contribute to this type of behavior. Check your fan to make sure it's not hitting a hose clamp or a radiator tank under acceleration. Sometimes when a hose clamp is turned just right and the fan gets enough flex you can end up hearing the two of them making a connection under load.
After you accelerate and it makes the sound, does it stop until you accelerate again? Sorry if this was covered earlier. Definitely sounds like something is binding, possibly ujoints which could be due to as earlier mentioned motor mounts, trans mount, etc...
