hey guys. I got EFI exhaust manifolds for my truck and the first three feet of pipe that hooks up to them. But, I have no way of hooking up the exhausts as far as a muffler and all that. So, would it hurt the engine if I drove it to the muffler shop to have them weld everything up for me? The exhaust would be pretty much open, no cats or muffler hooked up on the way there. I have heard that the inline six needs a considerable amount of back pressure to run properly. I hope I am making sense here. Anyway, any help would be great.
thanks for information. I don't think the cops will care a whole lot. There are some loud vehicles on the road here in Arkansas. Think I could just leave the muffler out and run a sinlge 2.5" pipe out the side just in front of the right rear tire and still be okay? It would save me some money, and in college money is hard to come by.
It does not need back pressure to run properly, it needs small diameter headers and 1st half of the exhaust smaller than 3" to acheive high speed gas flow to promote good cylinder scavenging (and thus torque) at low to mid rpm's. Big diameter pipes and shorty headers only work at higher rpms than 300's usually run at.
I don't have any headers. I am bolting an EFI exhaust maifold. Will have pretty much the same effect? I have decided to go with 2.5" pipe unless someone suggest otherwise. I want to keep the good low end torque. I am thinking about just running it through the existing muffler for now, I am running short on funds. A few things have come up unexpectedly. That way, when I am ready, I can just put on a new muffler. Any of you guys used the Hooker Aerochamber?
I wouldn't do it in REALLY COLD weather, BUT since you said you are a fellow Arkansan I would say go for it (the weather has been really nice lately). Although, you are really close to true dual exhaust right now and if you talk to enough shops eventually you could find one that will do it custom at a reasonable price. Don't know about the Hooker but I am running dual Flowmaster 40's with dual 2.25" pipes exiting in front of the rear wheels, and NO it DIDN'T hurt my low end torque. Whatever you do, try to get rid of that factory muffler when you can! Enjoy.
Hogs are doing pretty good. Nice to know some other Arkansas people use this site. You know where any good exhaust shops are in the Little Rock area or near Arkadeplhia? I have thought about dual exhaust, but that means two mufflers, and that just isn't in the budget for now. I will have to wait on that one. Any advice on where to go?
I'm from Mountain Home, AR and I'm not too familiar with the Little Rock area. I know a guy at work that is very familiar with the "good ole boys" in Little Rock, maybe he will know someone. Mine is a custom job from up here in the northern part of the state. Dual exhaust is not a big deal if you go single with a large enough pipe, but make sure you ditch that HUGE muffler! I just like my duals because of the very DISTINCT noise they make. Keep pullin' for the HOGS, because they're going to need it these next few weeks.

Been doing it like that for over a year now here in Nebraska w/ no cats or muffler only I'm still using the stock manifold on my 86 F-150 4x4. Unique sounding, sort of a steelly diesel sound. I've had no power loss and don't you worry about warpin a valve, only time that is prone to happen is if your exhaust is going up like a pullin truck or tractor b/c heat rises.
I have a hollowed out first cat, and no second cat, followed buy a 3" turbo muffler, 1ft of 3" pipe, and a turndown.
It sounds really funky. It makes a gurgly, swishy noise thats really hard to explain. I might switch to a baffled muffler to make it a deeper sound instead of this weird noise.
Truck runs fine though. The exhaust seems to have cleared it up a bit at higher rpm, but nothing too noticable.
