The duraspark ignition box is the brains to your ignition. The duraspark distributor is just a magnetic pickup that sends a signal to the brain to control spark.

If you want to eliminate the ignition box you would need to change to a self-contained distributor like and HEI or aftermarket type or a points distributor with an electronic ignition conversion kit installed into it. An HEI distributor would allow you to remove the resistor or resistor wire.

To get a launch controller your duraspark distributor is a great distributor to work with an MSD box (or any ignition box that can pick up a magnetic trigger). When running an MSD ignition box (6 or 7 series) you do not need any ballast resistor (resistor or resistor wire) for your stock coil or an MSD or aftermarket coil. The launch control would then plug into the MSD box or the MSD box would have the launch control in it on it's own.

Figured out

Found out the resistor protected the coil from overheating and aided long life on the points. Removed, no longer need. Installed Holley Dual Sync distributor and msd coil so I no longer need.
