Sooo,
anybody know what the deal is? I'm trying to set my timing (yes 6 degrees btdc) and when I start to get close she sputters and dies-real stinky too, runs pretty good at about 10degrees atdc-am I off by a tooth or something?
The engine really doesn't care if the distributor is off a tooth as long as you can rotate it enough to set the timing. If the timing chain hasn't stretched, the carb could be set a little lean causing the rough running at 6°BTDC. If it runs good and doesn't ping at 10°, go for it.
Timing at 8*? That's the first I've heard of that, it's a rebuild and I was VERRY careful about getting those two little dots lined up. It's the one with the 4 bolts on the damper rather than 3 and the timing marker at 11 o'clock rather than 2 o'clock. Block transformed from EFI with air-pump to carb with head holes blocked. Carb is brand-spankin' new and all calibrated for this engine. Gonna be a pain in the britches if I have to go back in ther and reset that timing chain....
dots part right matchin up on timing gears. but when you have the timing light going you want the light to be flashing on the 8*timing mark on the dampner.
BTDC is Before Top Dead Center and
ATDC is After Top Dead Center.
Edit...
Just re-read your original post.
If it's running much better at 10° ATDC than at 6° BTDC you're probably connected to the #5 plug wire. Try the front plug on the passenger side.
