Thx umm got another quest. My trucks a 79 F-250 Coustom casting number on block says its a 77 engine. Meaning not the original motor the guy i got it from says its a 351m whats the easiest way to figure out exactly what it is. As in if its a 351M, 351W, or 351C. Its my first truck project and i dont know a whole lot about engines but u got to start somewere. Thx for the info
351m-351c-351mc are all cleveland blocks m & mc have oil system and smog mods the c doesnot visually the same 351w is a winsor blockand looks like a 302 narrow valve covers standing allmost straight up .m-mc- c and 400m-mc are fat and are round toward the rear odds are you have the 351 is an m as w requires a different bell housing and m was the motor in 79 pickups

Actually, the Number cast into a part is the design number for a particular year, engine, model of vehicle.
Just because it has D7AE doesn't mean it is from 77.
It means that part was first designed in 1977 for a large Ford car but used on a truck.
It it was originally designed for a truck, it would read D7TE -
Now that we got that out..
To tell the exact date of casting, you have to look for the date casting code, this would be either a 3 digit or 4 digit number.
ie: * 8M21 * which translates to Dec 21/1978 which is going into a 79 vehicle.
Actually, the 351 Windsor, Cleveland and M are three distinctly different blocks. The 351M and 400 share the same block. Except for a very rare few, these engines have the large bellhousing pattern as used on the 429/460. They use the same heads as used on the 351C, resulting in occasional confusion in identity. The 351W, as stated is similar to the 302 but with a higher deck height. The 351W and 351C share the "small block" bellhousing bolt pattern with '65 up 289 and 302 V8s and the 240/300 Sixes. The Clevelands had a relatively short production period from '70 thru '73 and were never offered in the trucks.
