Over thinking EGT

Too much idle time and my mind is racing. Currently driving an X, 7.3, chipped on the lowest setting (from PO, and verified with the program tool), rest of the rig is stock. No EGT gauge, but Torque Pro.

I have an upcoming trip, and while I don't really think there is an issue.... Too much reading makes you second guess! Think long, think wrong.

Mountain pass (east coast, Black MTN) - 5 miles at 6% .Normal driving at 55mph. Should there be an issue?

Also, I read a post from BigRed1Ton, Manifold pressure can be used as a poor man's EGT. Problem is, I can't find the #s associated with normal/max

Thanks

" should not" be a issue.
if your ex feels like it's running right i wouldn't stress about it .
what tunes are you running?

Feels like it's running right. I have no idea really about the chip or tune other than the PO said it was for "mileage", and it doesn't feel super sporty.

I generally drive like paw paw, but enjoy the constant speed going uphill. If I tow, I use the 6.0 SD pickup. The X is strictly a family hauler/DD for me.

You mean "OK" empty i.e. Just the X and no trailer?

I borrowed my dad's Duramax for awhile when my truck was down. He had an economy tune loaded on his Edge and it ran hot. It ran fine with a moderate throttle and relatively flat land. Climbing, though, required me to downshift to keep temps manageable to maintain speed.

That being said, if you aren't planning on being Speedracer and if you keep the RPMs around 2500-2800 RPM when you're climbling I would think you'd be fine. JMO

Higher RPMs = lower EGTs comparably

Yes, empty. Just passengers and gear. Nothing to speak of really.

So based on this, cruising up grade - higher RPM's ensures safe EGT's? So just take it out of OD?

I have yet to have any EGT issues if I take it out of OD and run 2500 rpm. I may or may not keep up with traffice but the truck's happy and EGTs are happy which makes me happy. Peak HP on a stock truck is at 2800 RPM. I've not had any issues running 2500-2800 RPM if the truck starts struggling. Sometimes it's in a lower gear and traffic is passing me but the truck just happily chugs along. I'm not young any more so I don't have to get there first.

You should have zero issues. I live at 7K feet and regularly go up to 10K in my F350 DRW, I've never had an issue. A EGT gauge isn't that expensive or hard to install.

I'll just add it to the list of things I need to spend $$$ on . We go to the mtns frequently, and there is a small pass around Boone. I don't think it's a big deal, but never really considered the EGT's since i wasn't towing anything. Like I said before, probably just overthinking.

I was just looking at ArmyLifer's thread, and the MaxTow gauges..........

There's no problem that can't be solved with enough Silver or Lead. LOL. s. I run Autometer gauges, only issue was with a used gauge I bought, their CS was outstanding.

IMO, EGT & Transmission temperature gauges are the minimum we should have in our trucks. Good Luck with your trip.

Our trucks can get hot but cool down quick. By the time I pull into a parking lot and find a space I'm almost at 300F. You should have no problems unless you want to drive up Everest at 1500 RPM.

Enjoy your trip!

Short term - keep your Rs up with loads uphill. Long term - I've seen what happens when something is amiss under the hood, volcanic EGTs are one of the common symptoms... so an EGT gauge or two is a good idea on our Jurassic rigs.

Agreed, there are a lot of possible issues that might not be very noticeable that can really cause problems. Gauges are cheap insurance.

Compared to the potential cost of repairs...definitely. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
