Have a frame and running gear off a 69 or 70 F250 4x4 that I want to put under a 70 F250 camper special 2wd. In looking at the front axle which is the closed knuckle design it looks like the right axle tube has been broken and welded where the steering stop bracket would have been. So I am thinking maybe of going to an open knuckle front axle. Since the truck now has disk brakes on it I would like to go back with disk. What axle will fit this frame? The pinion shaft goes in at the bottom of the pot. Thanks.
Bill what later 4x4 front end with disk brakes had the pinion shaft coming in on the lower side of the diff case? The 82 F250 that I have comes in on the top side. The front axle that is under the frame now has drum brakes. The pickup itself has disk since it is 2 wheel drive. Was just thinking if I was to change front axles that I would go back with a later one that was sit up for disk. Of course the next thing would be to find one with the correct ratio. Think the tag on the rear axle in the truck now said 3.53. I have no idea yet what ratio is in the 4x4 frame as both covers are aftermarket with cooling fins and I did not see any tags. Will have to pull a cover and count teeth one of these days.
A more important issue, is that the 2wd and 4wd frames were very different up front.
You can't convert a 2wd to a 4wd without heavily modifying the front frame/ crossmember, or at the very least, lifting it way up so that the frame/truck sits well above the axles.
Well you are going to need the 4x4 frame and do a body swap. I would look for an axle from 77.5 to 79 and either go with a HP44 with disc brakes or if you can swing it go with a 60. I used a 79 HP44 on mine.
Yes I know that. I have a 4x4 frame that has transmission, transfer case, front and rear axles. No cab and the box has seen better days. Looking it over the front axle looks like the right tube has been broke and welded back together where the steering stop would be located. The stop is gone on that side. So I was thinking of putting a later front axle under this frame if I could locate the right one. Since the truck is now sit up for disk brakes as it is a 2 wheel drive I would think the master cylinder and related parts could be reused if I can find a disk brake axle.
