I have found a deal on a Super Duty 6.8L Triton V10. I have never had anything larger than my F150 and don't know much about F250's or those particular motors. The truck has 278K miles on it. What is the average expectancy on those before you have to have them rebuilt? Anything in particular I should look at or listen for when I am test driving it. I am planning on buying it or something like it to pull a 5th wheel camper. Any information or input would be greatly appreciated.
I assume the spark plugs and possible thread problem has been addressed in that truck?
Nope but... I wouldn’t let it deter you from it either Ford didn’t add the extra 4 threads in the head till job 2 builds of 2003. This is a non issue though if you change the plugs and torque then properly. The modular motors can easily go over 300k miles if maintained properly and there are a bunch of them with over 500k miles and still going strong but it being a used truck and engine your relying on the way someone else has treated, and maintained it for almost 300k miles but the modular motors are very reliable in general in v8 and v10 form and both get approx the same mpg. They are good motors but can be thirsty don’t expect over 13 mpg at anytime if fuel mileage is a deal breaker for you then don’t get one. Check the exhaust manifolds for rotted studs and exhaust leaks. This is especially true if they salt the roads where you are for half the year along with the body rot. I’m very happy with my v10 but I knew what I was getting into and it is completely rust free.
How heavy is this fifth wheel camper?
What gear ratio does the V-10 truck have?
The 2V V-10 4R100 combo really benefits from the deeper 4.10 and 4.30 gears offered as opposed to the standard 3.73 gears, the heavier and higher profile (like a fifth wheel) the trailer the the more the deeper gears will shine.
