Hello everyone. I am in need of a new starter for my 86. Whenever I search for "starter replacement Ford F150 4.9", DB electrical comes up in my search. They have a PMGR (which i had to google) starter listed cheap. And that company has been mentioned here a time or 2. But I must be missing the true reviews of the part/company, because I haven't really found any.
Has anyone used their upgraded starters? $46 too good to be true?
I would rather get one locally so the warranty is easier to use if you need it. If you get new you probably won't need the warranty. If you get rebuilt, you probably will need the warranty.
I have a DB Electrical starter and 10si alternator on the 454 in my boat, both have worked fine for years. I also bought a 130 amp 3g from them for my truck, it died in a few months. It was still under warranty so I did nto disassemble to diagnose the failure. I called them and asked to have it replaced under warranty, they refused to send a new alternator until they received the old one. I couldn't wait more than a few days and I didn't want to void the warranty and not be compensated for repair parts for the DB 3g so I bought another alternator locally. DB did replace the failed alternator, it took at least a week with round trip shipping and so forth, I gave it to a friend and it has been working fine on his Mustang though that car gets very few miles put on it.
Over the years with auto parts and anything else I've learned warranties are useless and rarely honored, or you'll have to jump through many hoops to get any compensation from them. Never buy anything for the warranty, just consider it a possible source of compensation but don't count on it. Also, keep a PDF copy of all receipt, back them up on separate storage and keep it all organized. Take pictures of your install and purchases, keep them organized and backed up as well. Scan all paper receipts, keep both original and digital copies safe. Most companies will weasel out any way they can and make a warranty claim impossible or cost more than just buying a new part from a better vendor.
The local auto stores will definitely honor the warranty, but they do not mind making you taking it off and putting it back on 15 times to finally get a good unit.
