65 Steering Box options, Manual
Question is:
1965 F100 steering box rebuilt, replace, or?
It seems as though the 65 manual steering box is a one year only, not many parts available situation. Even basic parts like seal kits.
My box is getting to be as sloppy as a 13 year olds room.
Are there parts, replacement boxes, rebuilders out there?
Or even power conversions like what Borgeson makes for other applications(I've installed one of those on a 65 Mustang for some one).
1965/72 F100/250 2WD; 1967/72 F350.
All the parts are obsolete, but some are available NOS .. You could send it to Red Head Steering Gears in Seattle and have it rebuilt.
Upper pic = C5TZ-3504-D: 3524 is the steering shaft; 3552/3571 are the steering shaft bearings and races; 3575 is the sector shaft; 3576 are the sector shaft bushings.
3581 is the sector shaft gasket; 3591 is the sector shaft seal, 3783 is the steering shaft seal.
The #s on the box on the truck are: on Tag HDC B 4L 19B. Need to scrape off some grease to read the #s on the case and pitman arm.
I have another box with a pitman that I picked up several years ago. The #s on it are: on Tag HDC B 5JO 1B 1, on case C5TA-3550, on pitman arm C5TA-3590A then maybe -69 on the end that's hard to read.
Figuring it's the same box as what is on the truck now. I plan on pulling the box off the truck and doing some type of okie scientific testing with a dial indicator on both to see which box has less play.
I know from the Mustangs I've built that those use NLGI #1 grease, thick enough to not run out like gear lube and not as thick as wheel bearing grease that will stick in the corners. Same grade, NLGI #1 for a F100?
