f100 4x4 manual steering box

Does anyone in oregon have a manual steering box for an F100 that i could get for a reasonable price? I know that I should swap in a power steering box, or get a rebuilt one, but being 16, i don't have the money. Even a junkyard in the area. Any input would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Brennan Johnson

C7TZ-3504-M .. M/S Gearbox-1966/75 F100 4WD & 1975 F150 4WD / Obsolete

Any used gearbox you find won't be any better than the one you have now, could be worse.

You can have yours rebuilt by redheadsteeringgears.com .. located in Seattle WA

Look at the parts catalog pic: The parts that are replaced in rebuilt boxes are: 3552/3553 bearing cups, (2) 3571 bearings & especially (2) 3576 sector shaft bushings.

All are obsolete, but all are available NOS as are the 3581 gasket & 3591 seal. Buy the parts (I'll list the part numbers/sources) and fix it yourself.

You might be surprised. The one in there now will not turn to the left very well. Once you move past the center, it gets vibrations up the steering shaft, and feels like it is slipping. Could this be a bearing, or is it possibly something more serious, like a worm gear with broken or warped threads?
Thanks for the info,

Depends. Did you just get this truck and maybe it sat in a field somewhere for years?

The previous owner was my grandfather, who put it into a ditch.

Ahhh. My money is on the steering linkage being your problem not the gear box then. Have a buddy move the steering wheel back and forth and watch the linkage to rub something or get jambed up. Especially in the area you have the problem.

Bill,

Thank you again for the wealth of information. I'm not sure I have thanked you yet.

I might as well rebuild my box while its out and I can. I plan on upgrading to power steering but a good manual box is good to have as well.
